"Wolves at the Gate, Part One" was the twelth issue of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight comic book series, which was part of the Season Eight meta-series.

Synopsis

At night, Xander and Renee observed a pack of wolves lingering by the moor. Willow arrived at the castle with Andrew, who sent himself off to bed right away, just as Willow was attacked by a mysterious woman, Kumiko Ishihara, shrouded in fog. Meanwhile, Buffy and Satsu talked together in bed, following a surprising one-night stand. Though she said she had a wonderful night and seems happy, Buffy asked that Satsu not tell anybody about their experience. Satsu immediately agreed, but the secret did not last long as Xander suddenly walked in to report to Buffy that wolves were outside the castle. Soon, Renee, Andrew, and Dawn each made their entrance in the room reporting increasing signs of trouble. All were flabbergasted about who they found in Buffy's bed, Xander enough so that he decided he was dreaming. He sat down saying he had had this dream before and they just needed to wait for Willow to turn up. Willow then crashed through the ceiling, and proclaimed that they were under attack, before also asking why Buffy was naked in bed with Satsu.

Whilst the Slayers were busy battling wolves, panthers, and swarms of bees, a lone wolf transmogrified into fog and breached the armory. Transforming back into a man, Toru, he headed straight for the Scythe. Another man, Raidon, joined him, but before they could escape, Buffy sent the thief flying with a punch. He was revealed to be a vampire, and distracted Buffy long enough to allow the other man to transform into a panther and escape with the Scythe. The Scoobies were left dumbfounded as the attack ended with all the enemies retreating into fog and animal form, and Buffy realized they faced a great new threat, especially considering that their enemies now had the Scythe. However, all was not completely lost, as Xander recognized these powers and flew in his helicopter with Renee. They arrived at a castle and were greeted by an old friend: Dracula. Xander called him Master, revealing that he was still under Dracula's thrall.

Trivia

  • Goddard had chosen to use two of his favorite characters in the story, Andrew Wells and Dracula. Dark Horse editor Scott Allie comments that Goddard would be the preferred writer should Dark Horse ever decide to do an Andrew miniseries.
  • This issue received a great deal of publicity and criticism. The debate centered on Buffy sleeping with fellow Slayer Satsu. Some critics speculated that Whedon had Buffy involved in a lesbian encounter as a marketing ploy. However, Whedon had profusely denied these claims, adding that it was a logical step for the character in light of the series. Whedon had also been supported by the issue's writer Drew Goddard, Season Eight editor Scott Allie, and reportedly a large number of fans over the Internet.
