Wish-granting was the ability to alter reality through a wish. It was one of the main powers of vengeance demons.[1]

Examples[]

In Chicago, 1914, Anyanka exacted vengeance on a philanderer called Stewart Burns, granting a wish that transformed him into a grotesque demon and banishing him to a hell dimension.[2]

In Sunnydale, 1998, Cordelia wished to Anya that Buffy had never come to town. The wish created a grim alternate universe where, without the Slayer, the Master had risen and both Xander and Willow were vampires. Giles undid the wish by destroying the Symbol of Anyanka, which restored the main reality.[1]

In 2002, Halfrek coaxed Dawn into making a wish. Feeling that no one wanted to spend time with her, Dawn wished that people would never leave. Halfrek granted it by preventing anyone from leaving the Summers residence, but she was eventually caught in the curse and had to break it.[3]

Halfrek grant another wish by casting a curse on a father for his 11-year-old daughter. She made it so that any paper he touched that wasn't a child support cheque would result in paper cuts.[4]

Anya attempted to exact vengeance on Xander, but vengeance demons were unable to grant wishes for themselves. Anya attempted to convince the Scooby Gang to wish for something against Xander, but she ultimately prevented Spike from declaring his wish.[4]

Anya turned a man whose girlfriend wished he were a worm into a Sluggoth demon. However, Anya was eventually convinced to reverse the wish, and D'Hoffryn punished her by removing her ability to teleport.[5]

A woman talked with Anya about her cheating boyfriend being like a "spineless little pig." She worded that "he should just be spineless for real," which was insufficient for Anya to grant as a wish.[5]

Rachel, who had been humiliated by a group of fratboys, yelled that she wished they could all feel what it was like to have their hearts ripped out. In response, Anya summoned a Grimslaw demon that fed on their hearts. Anya eventually wished D'Hoffryn to take it back, which he did by the price of taking Halfrek's life.[6]

During a conversation with Willow, Buffy wished the Magic Council could deal with the Mistress and the Soul Glutton and wipe them out without bothering the Scooby Gang. The ghostly copy of Anya overheard hear and granted the wish, allowing D'Hoffryn to go after the two demon lords immune to their attacks and kill them with ease. Anya commented that might be closest a vengeance demon ever made a wish turn out to what the wisher actually wanted.[7]

D'Hoffryn attempted to write a new rule of magic that would free the power of vengeance demons from the whims of humans, but Buffy prevented him from using the Vampyr book.[8] In the confrontation between D'Hoffryn and the Scooby Gang, Buffy wished she had never allowed D'Hoffryn to take the new powers that made him invincible. Anya granted the wish, and the Scoobies were able to defeat the lower being.[9]
