Winifred "Fred" Burkle was a Slayer active in Los Angeles in a universe parallel to the universe without shrimp. She had Wesley Wyndam-Pryce as her Watcher[1] and lover.[2]
Biography[]
Fred attended UC Sunnydale when she was thirteen, earning a doctorate in physics. When she was twenty, she attended college again to get her second doctorate in physics, falling in love with Riley Finn. They broke up when he proposed to her, and not long after Fred found herself called on to be a Slayer. This led her to meet Wesley,[3] her Watcher who over time she would fall in love with.[2]
Fred and Wesley eventually joined Angel Investigations with Angel, Cordelia Chase, Spike, Charles Gunn, Andrew Wells, and Lorne.[1] During their adventures, they traveled to Pylea where they met the Groosalugg, who became a friend of the group, and fought the demon Lanugo.[4] At some point, Riley tried to recruit Fred to join the Initiative, but she refused.[3] Despite Angel being the group leader, he eventually became an actor and spent less time on missions.[1]
During one mission in 2022 against the mummy Suppiluliuma, Wesley was fatally wounded by the Blade of Suppiluliuma and, in desperation, Fred bought a spirit house to contain his soul. However, the weapon used to kill Wesley turned him into a zombie and Angel became trapped within the spirit house. While attempting to free Angel, the team accidentally unleashed a sorrow demon from the spirit house, which turned out to be their old friend Groo. Meanwhile, the Oz of another universe arrived and warned them about how an evil version of Angel had killed his friends.[1][2][4] However, with help from Riley, they were able to stop Groo and convince him to stop his rampage.[3]
Shortly after, the Daniel Holtz of another reality arrived in the Hyperion Hotel, hunting Angel's and Spike's counterparts. During the fight, the team stopped Holtz, but Wesley was further harmed while saving Spike, causing Fred to blame the vampire. Later, Spike returned along with Drusilla, who Fred briefly fought until Spike gave her a piece of his soul to bring Wesley back to life; Spike soon left, no longer wanting to work with the team.[5]
Fred and the others eventually learned that the evil Angelus and Spike were in their universe and creating a vampire horde.[6] They attacked their version of Angel when he returned from a film shoot, and, after explaining what was happening, the group went to find Spike and Cordelia. They found Spike after he had killed his counterpart and discovered he was almost soulless at that point, having been tricked by Dr. Daedalus when he came to him for help in saving Wesley.[7]
The team went after Daedalus and his henchman Nathan to get Spike's soul back, but the fight was interrupted by the arrival of Angelus and his horde.[7] The group managed to escape, with Daedalus coming up with the plan to resurrect the dead Slayer Buffy Summers, with the two Slayers briefly conversing. Despite Daedalus revealing himself to be a vampire himself, Spike arrived in time to kill him and informed the others that Wesley had sacrificed his life to return Spike's soul. After Angel killed Angelus, Fred and the rest of Angel Investigations prepared to fight off what was left of the vampire horde.[8]
