Voice manipulation was the ability to manipulate the features of one's voice, such as pitch, tone, and volume, to make it sound different. It was done often with the intent on deceiving[1][2][3] or threatening[4][2][5] others.
The ability to alter how a voice was heard was related to sense manipulation instead.[6]
Cases[]
Voice change only[]
- The Anointed One had the capacity to speak with a deepened voice, a fact uncommon for other vampires, who retained their human voices.[7]
- Vengeance demons could alter their voices. Halfrek used a deepened voice when confusing Xander with a victim,[5] and Anyanka had a raspy voice when performing Cordelia's wish then confronting Giles in the Wishverse.[8]
- Gachnar used a deepened voice when calling to be released in the Alpha Delta house. Later, when the demon appeared finally released, his voice was proportionately high-pitched.[4]
- The poltergeist Maude Pearson lured Cordelia into her haunted apartment by perfectly imitating Angel's voice on the phone.[1]
- During Jonathan's augmentation spell, he had an impressive singing voice.[9]
- During her time as a dark witch, Willow screeched at an inhumanly high frequency when on the hunt for Jonathan and Andrew.[10] She later deepened her voice whilst darkening her eyes while claiming: "Well, I've gone pro."[11]
- When the First Evil possessed Willow, he spoke through her in a loud, booming voice.[12]
- The demonic contractor Arney could replay anything he heard, mimicking any voice to the exact likeness.[13]
- While in the form as Chloe, the First Evil imitated Buffy's voice, repeating a statement made about the inevitability of Potential Slayers dying.[14]
- Jasmine acted as the Beast's unseen master using a loud male voice to pester Angelus and as part of her disguise.[3]
Voice change via appearance-change[]
The transition of one's voice to the voice of the shape they assumed was a common component of shapeshifting, transmogrification, possession, and glamours. Some instances included:
- When Peter Clarner would transform into a berserk version of himself with his formula, his voice became shrill and raspy.[15]
- Giles, when turned into a Fyarl demon, could only communicate in the language of the species without personally knowing it.[16]
- Jonathan once used a glamour to make him look like a large demon, also using a more threatening voice.[2]
- When transforming into a Wraith-er demon, Kim would endure brief spasms while singing, her voice changing along with her outer appearance.[17]
Voice removal[]
- Catherine cast a spell that muted Lishanne by sealing her mouth completely.[18]
- The Gentlemen would use a box to steal the voices of entire towns, so these demons would be allowed to remove the hearts of their victims without them yelling for help since a loud human voice was lethal to them.[19]
- While at the Bronze with Amy, Willow made a man's mouth disappear.[20]
