Vermis mysteriis was the genus of a demon that lived in San Francisco sewers.
San Francisco Police Department had supernatural crime consultants Buffy Summers and Spike to investigate a sewer killer. Finding several dead human bodies, the couple was attacked by a vermis mysteriis, successfully killing it. Detective Robert Dowling, officer Patterson, and the an unidentified police officer documented the demon, measuring and photographing it.
Through a picture, Rupert Giles identified the demon as of the vermis mysteriis genus.
This species of vermis mysteriis resembled a large lamprey with arms, due to its teeth, mouth, and elongated form. This demon didn't have blood, just slime, and got "a hide like a tank," impenetrable by the Scythe. The way to kill it was through his mouth and reaching his brain.
Behind the Scenes
- "De Vermis Mysteriis," or "Mysteries of the Worm," is a fictional grimoire created by Robert Bloch, and incorporated by H. P. Lovecraft into the lore of the Cthulhu Mythos.
- Despite being in Latin, vermis mysteriis doesn't follow the scientific taxonomy; binomial nomenclature refers to species, while the genus name forms only the first part of the name.
