The Tribunal was a supernatural court also known as the Cahair Binse (Chair of Judgement). If the individuals protector wins their trial by combat, they will protect the person until a certian age. If the representative of the Dark Ones wins, they will allow him to kill the person to collect the Dark Ones' bounty. In order to appear before the Tribunal, a person needs to present a Coat of Arms, a round bronze talisman, to them.
