Summary[]

At the Mortar + Pestle, Una greets as her friend Kerry enters the remedy shop. She jokingly refers to her as a "fallen woman" because of ongoing rumors surrounding her with a male schoolmate, when in reality all they did was hold hands. The joking quickly ends when Una realizes Kerry is upset by the incident, so she reassures her that by next week the gossip at school will be about something entirely different. A red smoke emits from the back of the shop and Una rushes to check out what happened. She finds Graham working on the Solaris spell, which when enchanted will create a ball of sunshine, thus making slaying vampires easier. Una returns to the front and sees Kerry has left.

Her friend doesn't come by for a couple of days, and Una hears that Kerry’s father had sent her to the Angelus Asylum, where "troublesome" girls were confined and forced to work in laundry. Once she tells Graham about her worries surrounding her friend, the Watcher states that Slayers has no place in the affairs of man, only in her duties to slay vampires and demons. Una reminds Graham how kind Kerry was to her when they first arrived in town; at a time when their shop was repeatedly vandalized because the townsfolk thought the pair of women were witches, Kerry walked Una home from school everyday and made her feel like she belonged to the world.

Despite Graham’s misgivings, Una sets off to the Asylum. She sneaks in hidden in a laundry bin. Inside a corridor, the confined girls and women all wear scarves around their necks, looking drained of all bodily energy. As the bells ring, they head down the corridor. Una finds Kerry and gets her attention, much to the dismay of an older woman. Kerry insists Una needs to leave right away: the nuns here are not "normal."

In the chapel, the vampire nuns praise Angelus, their creator and savior; the abbess described that he sired numerous convents across Europe in his heyday, then used the laundries as a way to provide the sisters with a never ending supply of girls to feed on. The girls, all lined up, remove their scarves, preparing to be fed on. Meanwhile, Una climbs in front of a stained glass window and uses her amulet to enact the Solaris spell. The spell works, killing all the vampire nuns but the abbess, who Una recognizes to be wearing the Gem of Amara in her finger.

The vampire, realizing that Una is the Slayer, attacks and attempts to choke her to death. Una uses a shard of glass to cut off the vampire's hand, removing the protection ring from her. Pulling the abbess closer to the window, Una throws herself into the stained glass so the sunlight casts inside the chapel. As the abbess burns in sunlight, Una falls though the window. She concludes that, even though her life will be short, she lived it to the fullest.
