"The Eating of Men" is a short story of the Chosen Ones graphic novel anthology. Written and illustrated by Celia Lowenthal, it was originally published on August 28, 2019 by Boom! Studios.

Summary

The boys of the village talk about the Man-Eater, a creature who has been killing men in the village. Among the children is the only girl Silvia Placida Ramberti, who often plays of sword fighting with them, causing much distress to her nanny Florentia. The nanny explains girls should be smarter than men, who relies only on their stick, a lesson Silvia knows by heart. She is twelve years old, and the day of her nanny leaving her is approaching, despite Florentia's deep caring for the lady.

In Silvia's thirteen birthday's eve, she discovers nanny Florentia killing her father, draining of his blood. Abashed from being seen, Florentia explains she's a vampire and offers to sire Silvia, so she's always take care of her. Silvia refuses her bite, and stakes her in the heart. As Florentia turns into dust, Silvia apologizes, crying over both her father and nanny's corpses. She runs away into the woods, where a Watcher has been looking for her. The woman begins informing Silvia of her destiny, but, seeing the child crying, she sits besides her as the sun rises.

  • Silvia was one the Slayers that first appeared in the "Chosen One" variant covers in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2019) comic series, in issue #2. The cover features an older Silvia riding a horse in the woods while hunting vampires with a crossbow.
