"The Calling" was the second issue of the Fray comic book series.

Synopsis

Melaka was well aware of the demon lurking behind her, and he lunged for her without hesitation. He referred to himself as Urkonn of the D'Avvrus. She zapped him with a laser and put it down for the count. However, as soon as she tried to catch a breather, Urkonn woke and plunged them both out of a window. As they fell, Fray continued to fight, until Urkonn told her that he was not trying to kill her.

Urkonn told her that he was simply trying to halt her flight. He claimed that he had been sent to train her and that she was the Chosen One, destined to lead humankind in war against the vampires. Fray was unimpressed, asking what vampires were.

Meanwhile, a vampire named Icarus was feeding from a girl. Two minions approached him with the stolen amulet and Icarus elected to take it do their leader. As he walked away, the minions talked about Icarus' past glory and how he was nothing but a lackey now. Icarus overheared and exerted his power over the minions by making one bite his own finger off.

By now, Mel had figured out that Urkonn was referring to Lurks. She didn't believe a word the demon had said. Trying to prove his point, Urkonn told her of her supposed dreams about past Slayers, but Mel claimed never to have dreamed anything like that.

On patrol, Erin was fuming at Mel’s attitude to her. It became clear that Erin and Mel were sisters, and Erin was concerned that she would lose her sister to the dark side. In Versi, Loo was trying to convince her friends that Mel was a hero and was cool. She told her friends that Mel was a thief and that sold it to them.

Unfortunately, in her apartment, Fray was not buying it. She didn't care about the Lurks, but Urkonn told her that they would eventually overrun the world. Suddenly a device that had traveled across Haddyn came through the window and Mel caught it. She called it a ‘carrier pigeon’ and it meant that she was being summoned for a job. She chose to leave Urkonn and take the gig, telling him to get another plan. When she had left, Urkonn pointed out that there was another plan, but she would not like it.

Mel was on her grab in the museum. She was distracted by Urkonn’s claims, but had to make the grab: a totem. Suddenly, an alarm went off. She realised that she didn’t do it, and found a Lurk feasting on the guard. It lunged for her and bit into her arm. She managed to overpower it and threw him at a display case which shattered.

Escaping from the scene, Fray returned to Urkonn and asked him one question: “What’s a Slayer?”

Continuity

The events took place after "Big City Girl", but before "Ready, Steady ...".

  • Urkonn is rather old and mentions computers and bullets, both being terms that Fray is unfamiliar with.
