Note: This article is about the in-world artifact. For the merchandising, see Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Tarot.

Tarot was a deck of cards used in rituals and spells, notably for divination purposes.

History

In 1997, Drusilla, combining with her abilities as a seer, used a Tarot set to inform Spike that the Du Lac Cross was needed to translate the Du Lac Manuscript, pointing to a card illustrated with where the cross was hidden.[1]

The cards also predicted the order in which the three assassins from the Order of Taraka would attack Buffy Summers, represented by a cyclops (Octarus), a insect (Norman Pfister), and a jaguar (Patrice). Finally, through a card of an angel, the Tarot revealed that Angel was the key to Drusilla’s cure.[1]

In 2000, four Tarot cards were used by the Scooby Gang to perform the enjoining spell. In order to combine their essences and abilities, each was assigned a card, in accord to their most prominent contributions to the group. The cards were, respectively: Spiritus (spirit) for Willow, Animus (heart) for Xander, Sophus (mind) for Giles, and Manus (hand) for Buffy.[2] The deck would then appear in Buffy’s following mystical dream.[3]

Both the witches Willow[4] and Tara[5][6] owned Tarot decks. An unidentified psychic hired by Wolfram & Hart had Tarot cards displayed as well.[7]
