Summary[]
Spike, Clem, and Indira sit with Cordelia in an all-night café, and she tells them she needs Spike's help against Drusilla. She explains that Drusilla became ambitious after her Spike died and assumed the role of "queen of vampires" in Cordelia's reality. Dru has teamed up with a dark witch who became the "queen of black magic" by her side. The couple plans to kill everyone Cordelia loved, cover their reality in darkness, and overrun it with vampires and demons. Unable to stop them, Cordelia hid her mother out of the country, and now she needs Spike's help to break Drusilla and the witch apart.
Spike is unsure, but Cordelia argues that he is a lot more needed in her world, where she is the only Slayer. She urges Spike to decide because the link Anya created for her won't last forever, and Spike is surprised to hear her Anya is alive. Indira agrees to join Cordelia, but Spike tells the teenager to stay with Clem until Giles sends someone to collect her and he won't take responsibility for her across dimensions. Indira appeals to Cordelia by saying her world needs all the help she can get, that Cordelia was younger than she is when she began slaying, and the experienced Slayer can teach her how to be one. Agreeing to take Indira, Cordelia stands up and screams for Anya to take them back, but nothing happens.
In the Magic Box, Anya struggles against Drusilla and denies knowing where Cordelia is. Drusilla threatens Jasper, and Anya casts a spell that makes it rain holy water in the shop. Burning, Drusilla hides under a table while Anya escapes with Jasper.
Drusilla returns to her lair and goes to the Queen of Black Magic, Tara. While they cuddle, Drusilla accuses Tara of letting her go alone because the witch still cares about Anya. Tara manifests from inside herself and hopes Dru didn't hurt Jasper. The Queen of Black Magic takes control again and explains that version of herself is hard to erase completely. Dru says the more magic Tara does, the less her older self will bother her. Tara argues that she gave Dru permission to enter the shop, so she already helped. Dru says Tara doesn't love her, and Tara says she does; she would never have betrayed Anya, her closest friend, if she didn't love Dru. Besides, Tara had to stay and continue her research on Kurgan's Grimoire and give her the world they want. Tara promises their love is real, and the couple continue to kiss.
In the café, Cordelia gives up trying to convince Spike to help her. Indira, Spike, and Clem follow her outside, and Cordelia mentions her sister called her Cordy, but the Master killed her, and now she tries not to think about it. Cordelia tries calling Anya again, but Anyanka appears instead, knocking Clem out. She explains she is the vengeance demon who used to be merged with this reality's Anya; her kind lives in the ether of the demon world, and humans call upon them for their darkest wishes, but to act in the human world requires flesh and bone. However, Anyanka calls herself a miracle; after what she describes as Anya "purging" her, the vengeance demon returned to the ether hell of her people, but her rage and longing to return to the flesh world gave her strength to become the first to build a physical body from dust. Now, she senses Anya's magic, which enraged and called for her.
Cordelia asks for Anyanka's help to find Anya, but the vengeance demon says she hates Slayers for always standing in the way of vengeance. Indira points out Anyanka also hates Clem; Spike tells Indira to back away, but Anyanka fights the two Slayers. Spike tries to convince Anyanka to stop fighting, but she threatens to rip his guts out for being friends with Anya. She accomplishes her threat, and Cordelia continues to fight while Indira worries about Spike. Anya enters the reality with Jasper and casts a binding spell that completely immobilizes Anyanka.
Clem wakes up, and Cordelia notes there's chaos in Anya's magic. The witch casts a healing spell on Spike, which strengthens him enough to accidentally send Clem flying when he tries to lift his friend from the ground. Anya confirms her magic feels different in this reality — stronger and wild —, which means it's unpredictable and she needs certain ingredients to reopen the portal safely. Clem offers to stay and babysit Anyanka.
In the Queens' lair, Tara praises the abilities of her pet monkey, Mister Pickles, in playing a toy piano. She tells him the tracking spell she did on Anya indicated she went to another reality, but Cordelia is nowhere to be found. Tara manifests from inside herself and guesses the Slayer is wherever Anya is. Tara is angered by this manifestation inside her head, calling it a ghost and an echo, but the inner Tara says she is her last shred of morality and will keep fighting for her soul. The inner Tara is fading every day, but both sides agree that keeping her is a good thing: it avoids letting Anya and Cordelia die. Tara concludes she won't tell Drusilla about her friends' location so they survive the bloodbath. Happy with herself, Tara encourages Mr. Pickles to continue his piano practice.
In Spike's apartment, Indira and Cordelia comment on Spike's poetry books until he snatches his poems from them. Anya complains about Spike using a nickname on her to differentiate the witch from "his" Anya, but Cordelia notes he doesn't use a nickname for her. Spike explains he doesn't confuse her with "his" Cordelia; she was not a Slayer and pretended to be tough, but she learned the hard way she really was brave. Focusing on their mission, Anya lists the ingredients she needs to stabilize the spell. Spike suggests the Magic Box, which is currently in a fenced sinkhole. Someone knocks the door and gives Spike a message: Zantina says Miranda is going after the hospitalized Slayer sooner than he thought. The group decides to split; Cordelia will go with Spike to save the Slayer, while Indira accompanies Anya to the magic shop.
With Clem's car, Anya drives Indira and Jasper to Sunnydale. Until they find a working radio station, Anya and Indira talk about many things, such as how Spike closed the Hellmouth, Indira's interest in Slayers, her grandfather's health, and how Cordelia deals with the deaths of her loved ones.
At the San Diego hospital, Cordelia tries to convince Spike they simply tell the Slayers guarding Gwen about the oncoming danger and move on, arguing that helping them in the fight would reveal to the demon world whose side Spike is really on. At that moment, Miranda and her demon gang reveal themselves, having sent the messenger to Spike so he would fall into their ambush.
Continuity[]
- Spike says he "saved the world a couple of times"; he most prominently helped prevent apocalypses in the episodes "Becoming, Part Two" and "Chosen."
- Spike is surprised the Anya from Cordelia's world is alive; his Anya died in "Chosen."
- Cordelia was called at fifteen years old, the same age as Buffy ("Becoming, Part One").
- Cordelia mentions a Spike that does slam poetry in another reality; Spike recited his poems in a bar in "Not Fade Away."
- Anyanka says she remembers "doing sweaty things" with Spike, referring to when he had sex with Anya in "Entropy."
- Anyanka mentions Anya "drove [her] out," and Spike says it's not how he remembers it. Anya lost her vengeance demon powers because Giles broke her power center in "The Wish" and again because D'Hoffryn punished her in "Selfless."
- Spike says Clem is "the new Giles" for being unconscious the entire fight. After many instances in which he falls unconscious ("Witch," "Inca Mummy Girl," "Revelations," etc.), Giles once described himself as having "a tendency to get knocked on the head" ("A New Man").
- Spike wonders about the differences between realities after seeing a hug between Cordelia and Anya, who, in his reality, only ever interacted in the episode "The Wish." He also mentions Xander, who dated them both: Cordelia from "What's My Line? Part One" to "Lovers Walk" and Anya from "The Prom" to "Hell's Bells."
- Spike says he lived in a crypt for years; he resided in the Hawley mausoleum from 2000 ("The I in Team") to 2002 ("Seeing Red").
- Spike mentions he was once a poet, as it's seen in the episodes "Fool for Love" and "Lies My Parents Told Me."
- Spike says he killed "two Slayers, maybe three." According to the Watchers Diaries, he fought and killed two Slayers ("School Hard") and he is shown killing the Slayers Xin Rong and Nikki Wood in the episode "Fool for Love." However, the non-canon novel Spike and Dru: Pretty Maids All in a Row features Spike killing another Slayer, Sophie Carstensen.
- Indira tells Anya that Spike sacrificed himself to close the Hellmouth ("Chosen") and eventually returned ("Conviction").
- Anya tells Indira about the deaths of Cordelia's sister and a boy Cordelia liked, which she will detail in "Episode 5."
- Cordelia says she hates hospitals; in "Killed by Death," her counterpart noted Buffy was afraid of hospitals because her cousin had died in one.
