Summary[]

Spike has repaired his image as "the Bloody," replacing his former reputation as the Slayer's "lapdog." A dozen years before, a powerful witch allowed every Potential Slayer to activate without the previous Slayer dying. Nowadays, with Slayers everywhere, the "friends of darkness" mostly drink and reminisce in monster fight clubs, which Spike is doing now. However, there's still an opportunity for evil and fighting back against the Slayers, and Spike is part of the resistance in Los Angeles.

In the fight club, Spike watches a match where a Fyarl demon wins and wants to take Spike next, but a vampire doesn't want Spike to die until he pays what he owns him. Clem calls Spike to the backroom because something is up there. Alone, they talk about a Slayer named Gwen, who is currently hospitalized in San Diego after her sister, mother, and grandmother were killed.

In the Dark Place, where gambling and dark magic happen, Spike approaches Miranda, a demon who consumes the misery of losing gamblers. She tells Spike she has killed everyone a Slayer loved and broke her body in a way the injuries will last, but the Slayer escaped before Miranda could feast on the misery. Miranda intends to wait, lull the Slayers guarding Gwen into a false sense of security, and then go after her. Spike offers his help, which Miranda accepts.

At that moment, a new Slayer enters the room in the middle of a fight. Spike joins the brawl, and Miranda has her minions attack the Slayer. They quickly take the girl down, and Miranda intends to keep her suffering for a long time to feed. Spike stops Miranda, saying the Slayer is his and the Dark Room has rules of not killing Slayers or Watchers on premises — unless Miranda wants to make the proprietors angry. Miranda allows Spike to take the unconscious Slayer and says she doesn't want his help anymore.

Clem helps Spike put the Slayer in the trunk of a car, and they drive off. Awaken, the Slayer starts screaming and struggling, and Spike stops the car. She gets to open the trunk by herself and hits Clem's in the middle of his apology. Clem explains they were getting her to safety, but she argues they are a demon and a vampire. Clem tells Spike she has a point, and the Slayer gets excited upon discovering the vampire is Spike.

Indira Nunnally says she is a fan then hits Spike, accusing him of being evil now. She tells them she ships Spike and Buffy and is known for being Slayer-obsessed. Indira hits Clem again, and Spike decides to tell her he is working undercover, as proven by him not trying to kill her. He explains Buffy and her friends are acting around the world, but he's stayed coordinating with the Watchers and giving them intel to help Slayers. Indira says it would be perfect if it were true because she doesn't have a Watcher yet, having got her powers just this morning. She decided to go into action and wait until a Watcher finds her, which is why she followed rumors about the Dark Room and attacked there.

Spike says he acts alone and can't be Indira's Watcher so he'll take her home. Indira says the only adult in her house is her octogenarian grandfather, and she needs a Watcher. Spike has an idea and drives to a shop. He enters alone and explains Indira's situation to the shopkeeper, Zantina, who argues she is not a Watcher anymore. She says she will call the Council, but Spike has to keep the Slayer until they send someone for her. Indira and Clem bond in the car while Spike calls Giles, but the Watcher doesn't pick up. Clem reminds Spike they are late for poker.

In the backroom of Galaxy Books, Clem and Spike play cards with Buzz, who is the embodiment of every dead hummingbird in L.A.; Rahim, the bookstore's owner; and an old lady known as Esther the Scavenger because she eats dead things. Talking about the books he reads, Clem explains he is fascinated by the way toxic people can't escape each other's gravity and declares that love is like quicksand, as example of Spike with Drusilla and Buffy. Esther says dead things with dead hearts can't love, and Spike expels her from the game. As she leaves, the remaining group hears a commotion in the store. Esther falls into the backroom and says there's a Slayer looking for Spike.

The Slayer apologizes for the mess, and Spike recognizes Cordelia. Indira asks if Cordelia Chase isn't dead, and Spike says he'll kill whatever the creature who took her appearance is. He attacks her, and she says she is not the Cordelia he knew; she is not from this reality. Where she came from, she is the only Slayer and Buffy never existed. Cordelia explains the Spike from her reality is already dead and she is fighting to keep Sunnydale safe from vampires, but she can't win this alone. Cordelia traveled between realities searching for Spike's help because the Big Bad of her world is someone only Spike ever understood.

Anya answers a phone call at the Magic Box from someone who won't let her explain the shop does not carry Harry Potter products, and she threatens to turn the caller into a lobster and boil them. Afterward, Anya plays with her puppy, Jasper and says she has to keep an eye on Cordelia now she's sent the Slayer to another world. Anya opens a scrying window to where she dropped Cordelia, but, instead, she sees an alternative reality of herself. On the other side, Anyanka the vengeance demon senses Anya the witch watching her. Anya quickly closes the window and is confused about what happened.

Someone knocks on the door, and Anya tells her puppy to hide. Drusilla crashes the door and declares she is a queen. Anya says Drusilla might as well cut her head off because it's only the thing Drusilla hasn't already taken, but adds that the vampire can't kill her because she can't get in. Drusilla says Anya's name is not the only one on the deed, and the queen of vampires enters the shop while Anya is in disbelief that "she" would ever betray her. Anya attempts a spell of invisibility, but Drusilla quickly grabs her by the neck because it's what "she" told her Anya would do. Drusilla tells Anya to answer if she wants to live: "Where is Cordelia Chase?"

Continuity[]

  • Spike describes it's been "a dozen" years after a powerful witch activated Slayers worldwide, referring to Willow Rosenberg performing a Slayer activation spell in 2003 ("Chosen").
  • A dozen years after "Chosen" makes this story take place years after the battle of the Reckoning circa 2011 in Finale, the final canonical story.
  • A vampire accuses Spike of working at a secret government agency, referring to when the Initiative had him imprisoned ("The Initiative").
  • Spike tells Miranda he has killed "a Slayer or two," as seen in "Fool for Love."
  • Indira tells Spike her father is in the Marines and her grandfather is asleep at home; in "Episode 9," she will confess her father has died, her grandfather has dementia, and nobody was waiting for her in the group home.
  • Clem says Spike's relationship with Buffy involved "pain and suffering." In "Never Leave Me," Spike declared he had "come to redefine the words pain and suffering" since he fell in love with her.
  • Indira and Spike note the Cordelia from their reality is dead, which happened in the episode "You're Welcome."
  • Spike is ready to fight Cordelia, believing she is a creature assuming her appearance. In "You're Welcome," he bit her because he though he was still under Jasmine's possession.
  • Anya says she thought the version of herself in Spike's reality was already dead, and Anya indeed died in "Chosen."
