Sirens were a Greek creature specie, half-woman, half-fish, known for eating virgin human beings. They sang a hypnotizing sound.
In San Francisco, Spike and Xander were seduced by two of these creatures in a bar. They wanted to provoke a mortal fight between the two men so they could devour the champion. However, the ghost of Anya Jenkins woke Xander, allowing Spike to kill two of the sirens.
The Sirens living in San Francisco didn't correspond to the definition found in Giles' books. Spike and Xander were not virgin humans. It could also be possible they had a modified comportment or they were a sub-specie of sirens.
