Spike assembled a shrine to Buffy Summers in the lower level of his crypt, composed of photographs, clothing, and other personal items he had taken from her.[1]
History[]
After Spike realized that he was in love with Buffy,[2] he began breaking into her house to steal personal items, including photographs[3] and articles of clothing.[4] In the tunnels beneath his crypt, he arranged the items on a dressing table, along with a mannequin fitted with a blonde wig.[1] Spike had originally used the mannequin as a training dummy,[5] and later to rehearse apologizing to Buffy.[6]
When Buffy became aware of Spike's feelings, she went to his crypt to tell him that there could never be anything between them. Drusilla suddenly appeared and knocked Buffy unconscious with a cattle prod. When Buffy awoke, she found herself chained in the lower level of the crypt, where Spike had also restrained Drusilla. The situation escalated when Harmony Kendall arrived, leading to a fight among the four. Once freed, Buffy punched Spike, sending him crashing into the shrine and destroying it.[1]
Spike later gathered the remains of the shrine and brought them to Warren Mears, forcing him to construct the Buffybot.[7]
Contents[]
Spike used the following items to compose the shrine on the dressing table:
- a blond mannequin wearing one of Buffy's sweaters;[1]
- photographs of Buffy;[1]
- drawings of Buffy;[1]
- several stakes;[1]
- panties[1] taken from Buffy's underwear drawer;[4]
- a hairbrush;[1]
- white candles.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The original script for "Crush" described the "shrine": "[A] rotted out, discarded vanity table. On the framed piece of plywood where the mirror was once mounted are pinned numerous drawings, photographs (some taken clandestinely from a distance)... of Buffy! [...] On top of the table, amid several candles, are a couple of stake shard, a large gauze pad with dried blood... [...] A small open drawer revealing several pairs of familiar looking underwear."[8]
