Sharmma is a demon-dragon from ancient China.

Biography[]

In ancient China, Sharmma is the chief of the Wryhrym, some of the last of the purebred demons who are believed to be dragons. Sharmma and his kind became responsible for much of the dragon mythology of China, but they are eventually phased from the world and exiled to other worlds. Sharmma is one of the last of the purebreds to leave, fighting against the arrival of mankind with every power that he possesses. Sharmma and his kind take advantage of the flooding of ancient China to unleash the Dread Dreaming, hopping vampires that come after the flood and prey upon their survivors by taking the pos of those who perished in the flood, binding them back into their decaying flesh and directing their anger at those who had survived.

During this time, a man named Gun is King Shun to solve the flooding problem which he does by attempting to appease the Wryhrym, but in doing so, he lost his soul. Gun spends nine years toiling in the valley of the Yellow River with some years being better than others, but the floods still came and people still died, increasing the power of the Wryhrym. Sharmma and his kind lie to Gun who tries to take the demons' power away by stealing a magical metal that the dragons used to build their own homes in the flooded lands. However, he only plays into Sharmma's hands by trying to contain the floodwaters with dikes that he was able to quickly build bigger and stronger with the demon material. However, this only makes the problem worse by saving up water for when the Wryhrym choose to strike again. People believe in what Gun is doing and build their homes in the valleys again until the dikes break, sending a huge mountain of water cascading through the valleys and destroying everything in its path, including Gun. Following Gun's death, the job of dealing with the flooding with is given to a man named Yu. Yu is given plans by Tien Long, a friendly Wryhrym who helped to found the Spirit Guardians that allows him to drain the valleys. In the years that follow, the floods are eliminated, the Wryhrym's strongholds are broken and they are finally forced from the world.

As a result of Gun's bargain with the demon-dragons, his bloodline is left tainted, leaving a link between Gun's descendants and Sharmma. For centuries, only one member of Gun's family a generation has a link to Sharmma, providing a the demon-dragon with a link back to the mortal world as long as Gun's bloodline is intact. However, by 1999, Zhiyong is the last of the bloodline and the first to seek out Sharmma's blessings and power and to be truly evil. Zhiyong becomes incredibly powerful as a result and surrounds himself with lesser demons who once served Wrhyrym.

In 1999, Zhiyong travels to Sunnydale where he plots to use the power of the Hellmouth to create guei that will give him control over the thirty-five descendants of the eight men who were responsible for a mine collapse. Through the guei taking over their bodies, he will gain more power to try to bring Sharmma back to the mortal world. Zhiyong's actions catch the attention of both the Scooby Gang and the Spirit Guardians who send Shing to stop them. By communicating with the spirit of Pak-lah, witch Willow Rosenberg is able to learn Zhiyong's plans and barely escapes the clutches of Zhiyong and a manifestation of Sharmma.

Buffy Summers and her friends assault McCroy's Salvage Yard where Zhiyong is performing his ritual. As the others deal with the demons, Shing and Xander Harris break Zhiyong's stone statues of Sharmma and Willow successfully performs a spell to bind the guei back into their bodies. Enraged by Zhiyong's failure, Sharmma causes smoke to enter the man from the black altar and Zhiyong's flesh to rip and bleed. When it's over, Sharmma has reentered the world through Zhiyong's body. The demon-dragon attacks the Slayer whose halbred proves to be useless against him. Angel manages to take out one of Sharmma's eyes with an axe, but the enraged demon-dragon rakes the vampire's midsection with his claws and flings him at least thirty feet, taking Angel out of the fight. Buffy climbs up on Sharmma's back and drives the spear point of her halbred into his spine and tries to cut through it, but Sharmma rears up suddenly on his back legs before coming crashing down, sending the Slayer flying.

Outmatched, Buffy runs from the demon-dragon who chases her throughout the salvage yard, intending on killing the Slayer and collapsing stacks of cars in his wake. Spotting the pickup truck that Rupert Giles had earlier driven at Zhiyong, Xander comes up with a plan and picks Buffy up in the truck. Spotting the truck, Sharmma continues the chase, quickly catching up. Xander reveals to Buffy that his plan is lure the demon-dragon over the propane tank in the truck's bed and then detonate it in the hopes of using the explosion to kill Sharmma although they both acknowledge the fact that due to Sharmma's fire powers, he may like the explosion instead of being killed by it. With no better options, Xander brings the truck to a quick halt and he and Buffy bail out and run while the demon-dragon blows fire at them, peeling the paint from the truck and setting the cab on fire. As Sharmma reaches the front of the truck and prepares to make the leap, Buffy throws her halbred at the propane tank. The propane tank is ignited as the demon-dragon is in mid-leap over the truck. The propane ignites in a superhot fireball that catches the demon-dragon squarely in its grasp. Shrapnel rips into Sharmma and reaches whatever pockets of fuel that he uses fiery breath. The fuel is ignited, obliterating Sharmma in at least half a dozen additional explosions, killing him. Sharmma's destruction rains bits and pieces of the demon-dragon down upon Buffy and Xander for a minute or so.
