The Shadow Caster Manual was an old tome that came along with the mystical shadow casters, which told the origin story of the First Slayer, Sineya.
It was in the possession of Nikki, who passed it to Robin, who eventually passed it to Buffy Summers.

The manual is a large and ancient book, with a worn-out nondescript brown leather cover and yellowing tattered pages.

The manual's text was written in Sumerian, and was initially translated by Dawn. However, once the shadow casters were completely set, the text magically transformed into English. It warned whoever was assembling the casters that he or she could not just be shown, nor could he or she just watch, but must see. The person had to see the story for himself or herself, but only if he or she was willing to make the exchange.
Effects and Consequences
As Buffy and her friends found out for themselves, if the manual's text was read in conjunction with the setting of the shadow casters, not only would they learn the origin myth of the First Slayer, but also a portal that enabled one to communicate face-to-face and physically interact with the Shadow Men would be created. However, there was still a price to be paid: while the person would be transported by the portal to the Shadow Men's domains, a demon would be unleashed on Earth.
