A book of unknown title accompanied the mystical shadow casters, narrating the origin story of the First Slayer, Sineya. These items were part of the "emergency kit" that Robin Wood inherited from his mother, Nikki, and later passed on to Buffy Summers.[1]

The manual's text was originally written in Sumerian, which Dawn Summers translated. As the Scoobies assembled the shadow casters, the text on one page transformed from Greek letters into English. The instructions warned that anyone who put the casters together could not merely watch — they had to see for themselves. This meant experiencing the story firsthand, but only if they were willing to make a sacrifice in exchange.[1]
