It is an ancient sacred text, written over the last 4000 years, in a dozen different languages, some of which aren't even human.
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce[src]

The Scroll of Aberjian,[1] also known as the Prophecies of Aberjian,[2][1] was a relic containing prophecies, prayers, and spells, such as the Shanshu Prophecy,[1] the Words of Anatole, a ritual of resurrection, and a prophecy on the Beast of Amalfi.[2] According to Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, the scroll was written over 4000 years in a dozen different languages, including Ancient Aramaic and others that were not human.[1]

History[]

In 2000, Angel found and stole the scroll from the vaults at Wolfram & Hart.[2] Later, the evil law firm conjured the demon Vocah to steal it, as they needed the parchment to perform a ritual to bring Darla from the dead. Angel did manage to kill Vocah, but Lindsey McDonald completed the raising. Afterward, Lindsey attempted to burn the parchment, but Angel kept him from doing it by cutting his hand off.[1]

The Prophecies of Aberjian also mentioned three children, seers; together they had the power to see into the heart of things, which made them a real threat to Wolfram & Hart. They were each found in different remote locations and brought together by the law firm. They would have been killed if Angel hadn't intervened. According to the prophecies, they had an important role to play.[2]

Following the chaos apparently caused by the simultaneous presence of two vampire champions with souls — Angel and Spike —, Rutherford Sirk translated a false portion of the Shanshu Prophecy that had been planted at Wolfram & Hart. The passage said: "The root of the tree will split in two. And each thing will seek nourishment from the buried river." This then led to the description of the location of the Cup of Perpetual Torment, which one of the two must drink from to complete the prophecy. This was a plan Lindsey orchestrated to discredit and discourage Angel.[3]

The original scroll was kept at the Wolfram & Hart Los Angeles branch. To prove his loyalty to the Circle of the Black Thorn, Angel signed it with his blood to give up his chance of one day becoming human again with the Shanshu Prophecy, exploiting their inability to understand that he would do good for the sake of it rather than for a reward.[4] However, the Senior Partners never filed the paperwork, so it was thus still possible for him to regain his humanity through the prophecy.[5]
