Illyria's sarcophagus had a collection of crystals surrounding its aperture. Fred became infected by Illyria after touching a purple gem, which opened the aperture. After Illyria took over Fred's body, she touched the same gem to restore her powers.

According to Wesley, the gem placed on a focal point had some power remaining after Illyria's return. Wesley dislodged the gem, and Angel used it to remain unaffected by Illyria's time manipulation.
