Restfield Cemetery was one of the twelve cemeteries in Sunnydale, along with Shady Hill[1] and Sunnydale Cemetery.[2][3] It notably contained the mausoleums Alpert,[1] Anderson, Van Elton,[4] Von Hauptman[1] Law, and Spike's residence in the Hawley mausoleum.[5][6]
History[]
After a soulless Angel killed Jennifer Calendar in 1998, Rupert Giles and Buffy Summers visited her grave in Restfield Cemetery.[7] Buffy often patrolled the cemetery that year,[8] where she and Angel fought twice.[9][10]
Months later, Buffy and Faith Lehane fought two vampires in Restfield under Giles's observation, when Gwendolyn Post first introduced herself. The following night, Faith patrolled the cemetery alone, despite Buffy's suggestion that they go to Shady Hill Cemetery together, which was closer to Maple Court. However, Faith chose Restfield as it was on her way to Sunnydale Motor Inn.[1]
While there, Faith fought Lagos, a demon warrior who had been searching for the Glove of Myhnegon. The artifact was kept in the Von Hauptman mausoleum and later retrieved by Angel, an event witnessed by Alexander "Xander" Harris, who learned of Angel's return. The following night, Willow Rosenberg accompanied Buffy on her patrol, during which Buffy killed Lagos by beheading him.[1]
In 1999, Xander drove Jack O'Toole and Lysette Torchio to Restfield, where Jack planned to resurrect his friends. Big Bob, who had been buried there, was successfully brought back, but the appearance of the zombie caused Lysette to flee. While they reanimated Parker, Giles attempted to communicate with a spirit guide to seek guidance about the upcoming apocalypse, but they refused to help him.[11]
Daniel "Oz" Osbourne used a crypt in the cemetery to confine himself during the full moon for his werewolf transformation, having previously used a cage in the Sunnydale High School library, which was currently in ruins. However, he escaped one night, prompting him to reinforce the crypt's gate. To prevent the werewolf Veruca from endangering the town's population, Oz confined her in the crypt with him, where they mated. Willow discovered them together the following day.[12]
In 1999, Anya Jenkins attempted to contact D'Hoffryn in a crypt while Xander, Buffy, and Spike were attacked by a group of demons as result of a spell cast by Willow. It also caused Buffy and Spike to kiss each other rather than fight the demons. The situation was reversed when Willow returned and performed a reversal spell.[13]
Overview of the cemetery in 2000.
Giles wandered through Restfield after he could no longer be around humans, who were frightened by his new Fyarl demon form. He encountered Spike, who was measuring the exterior of the Alpert mausoleum in search of a crypt to reside in. Although Spike initially intended to fight Giles, he realized through understanding the Fyarl language that the demon was actually Giles, who then promised to pay him in exchange for assistance in locating Ethan Rayne.[14] Spike eventually took up residence in the Hawley mausoleum after moving out of the Xander's basement.[15]
Under Jonathan Levinson's augmentation spell, he and Buffy pursued the Monster in Restfield, where they encountered Spike. When Buffy threatened him for information, Spike directed them to Brookside Park.[16]
Soon after Dawn Summers' arrival, Buffy and Riley Finn patrolled together in Restfield. Buffy complained about her younger sister always being protected, while Riley explained that Dawn was constantly around because she looked up to Buffy.[17]
Restfield Cemetery was destroyed along with the rest of Sunnydale following the battle at the Hellmouth in 2003.[18] Buffy and Spike eventually returned to the city's ruins and discovered the remains of Restfield, where they discussed their past and confronted the Soul Glutton.[19][20]
Behind the scenes[]
- The cemetery is identified by name in the episodes "Revelations" and "The Zeppo," but the location has other recognizable appearances due to the notable presence of the Alpert mausoleum and Spike's crypt.
