What you're looking into is the Quor'toth: the darkest of the dark worlds.
Sahjhan[src]

Quor'toth was a dimension known as "the darkest of the dark worlds."[1] It could be accessed only through tearing the very fabric of reality and not via a regular portal, unlike Pylea or other dimensions.[2]

History[]

2002[]

Sahjhan opened an entrance to Quor'toth during a four-way confrontation against Holtz, Wolfram & Hart, and Angel Investigations in dispute of the baby Connor. Holtz jumped into the doorway with the baby,[1] where he raised Connor as a warrior and demon hunter, instilling in him a hatred for his father Angel.[3] While eighteen years passed on Quor'toth,[4] only days passed on Earth.[5]

As a side effect of a dark ritual Angel performed to make Sahjhan into a corporeal being, a new tearing connecting Earth to Quor'toth opened. A large number of sluks entered appeared in the Hyperion Hotel, escaping the Destroyer, the title with which Connor had came to be known in Quor'toth.[6] Connor followed them and found his way back to Earth, followed by Holtz himself.[3]

End of magic[]

During the end of magic, Willow found a ritual that would allow her to visit Quor'toth, using the as a battery and Connor as a focus for the summoning. Since Quor'toth was never accessed via portal, it was the only other dimension still accessible from Earth. Willow intended to enter Quor'toth, use its magic to recharge her reserves, travel to other realities, and find a way to restore magic in her world.[7]

While Gunn waited on the side of the portal in the Hyperion Hotel, Angel, Connor, and Faith accompanied Willow to protect her from Quor'toth's residents until Willow built up enough power to take action.[7] Although Willow had some trouble processing Quor'toth's magic at first, she was eventually able to harness enough power to open a new portal, but Connor asked that they remain in Quor'toth to help some of the demons who had formed a cult around his legend of compassion in the centuries that had passed.[8]

The group staged a raid on the prison and freed the pacific demons. However, their actions awoke the Old One the dimension was named after: Quor'toth, which unleashed such raw power against the group that Willow reverted to her dark appearance.[9] Willow and Angel were overwhelmed by the dark influence of the realm, but Willow eventually sent the Connor to the world without shrimp, while Angel, Faith, and Connor returned to Earth.[10]

Nature and physics[]

Quor'toth was well-known as the "darkest of the dark worlds," the mere mention of its name enough to frighten those who had heard about it.[2] Despite its nature, Quor'toth appeared to be hospitable enough to allow Holtz and Connor to survive for eighteen years.[6][3] According to Connor, modern Earth technology such as guns could not function in Quor'toth.[7]

Unlike most dimensions, Quor'toth could only be accessed by tearing holes in the fabric of reality itself; after the initial tearing, Sahjhan claimed that the universe would collapse if he tried to do so again.[2] However, as Willow was able to open such an entrance herself to no ill effect, it could be assumed he had lied. After the destruction of the Seed of Wonder, only Quor'toth could still be accessed from the magicless Earth because it was not accessed through a conventional portal.[7]

Quor'toth was inhabited by the Old One it was named after, with this entity attacking Angel, Faith, Willow, and Connor, angered at the compassion Connor had inspired in its world.[9] It also brought out the darker aspects of those who entered it;[8] Connor, Angel, Faith, and Willow were only able to resist its influence due to their experience at fighting their own dark natures.[10]
