Perfect Zheng was a vampire who prided himself on his perfection in terms of style and combat.[1] However, Zheng was nevertheless frustrated by failing to be cursed with a soul.[2]
Biography[]
Zheng was a skillful fighter in his human life. In 1310, he fought and defeated an army of vampires in the Chinese steppes until the last one sired him.[1]
Zheng met Angel in a bar in London in the 1920s. Drunk, Angel punched Zheng for defending a woman from his advances. Zheng fought back and left Angel bleeding unconscious on the sidewalk.[1]
According to Zheng, the Ritual of Restoration that had cursed Angel was only performed to test if a soul could be restored to a vampire in the first place, and Zheng was the one intended to be the vampire champion. Although the Kalderash people were able to find Zheng and perform the curse, it failed to take, Zheng thus being left tormented at the idea that he might not have been good enough to become ensouled.[2]
In 2001, Zheng finally tracked Angel down in Los Angeles. He captured Angel with the aid of three demons[1] he had enslaved with a magical symbol on them.[1][2] Angel failed to provide him with any answers about the reasons he could not be cursed, so Zheng intended to study him with the hope of transferring Angel's soul into him if his own could not be restored.[2]
Thanks to the intervention of Gunn, Angel managed to free himself and fight Zheng. While leaving Zheng tied in his airship, Angel told him that he didn't have any answers about why the spell worked for him and not Zheng, but observed that Zheng wouldn't want a soul anyway as he wouldn't be able to cope with it. Angel and Gunn escaped as the airship exploded.[2]
