Osiris, keeper of the gate, master of all fate, hear us.
―Willow Rosenberg[src]

Osiris was the deity who authorized resurrection spells. Giles described resurrection spells invoking the god as very 'ferocious' and 'primal'. This was evidenced by the deity's capability to pull out souls from other dimensions and send them back to earth.

Powers and abilities

Although capable of resurrecting someone, Osiris did not allow its use to anybody. Osiris had rules on whether a person is qualified for resurrection. People whose deaths were related to supernatural causes or events were permitted to be resurrected. Conversely, people who died of natural causes, such as disease or murder by a non-mystical weapon like a gun, could not be brought back. Whether or not Osiris drafted the rules himself was unclear. Additionally, whether his authorization for resurrection spells was a mere preference or an actual limit on his capabilities was also unclear.

Weaknesses

When Osiris was summoned by Willow in an attempt to resurrect Tara, the deity denied the request, claiming Tara's death was natural. In her grief, Willow banished the deity with shrill wails.

Behind the Scenes

The Egyptian god Osiris was killed by his brother Set and sealed in a coffin. He was resurrected by his wife Isis for a short time so they could procreate. He was then resurrected as the god of the dead. The cult of Osiris was especially interested in mortality. These traits make Osiris a popular god in vampire fiction.
