"New blood" referred to vampires with enhanced abilities[1] due to the constant consumption of the alchemy recipe of bad blood.[2] In comparison with other vampires, they had accelerated regeneration,[3] enhanced durability,[1] and, when poisoned,[4] eventually mutated into stronger bat-like "monsters."[5]

History[]

In 1999, Selke sought the surgeon Dr. Flitter to solve the deformation her scarring body suffered when Buffy had set the vampire on fire.[6] Flitter eventually translated and produced an alchemy recipe that would manipulate the basic components of blood. Selke drank it, and the compound made her skin heal into its previous appearance.[2]

Returning to the base of operations of her coven, Selke dusted Rouleau and took over the role of leader. She shared the bad blood with her new allies, transforming the other vampires into new bloods like her.[3] Even with their enhanced powers, the vampires were still no match for the Slayer. This also sparked a vampire "civil war" as traditional vampires tried to attack the new bloods to get a taste of their powers.[1]

Preoccupied with her plans to kill Buffy and take over Sunnydale, Selke failed to notice that rival vampires Spike and Drusilla poisoned her concoction with essence of garlic and powdered crucifix,[4] which caused her blood cells to degenerate and mutate. Selke transformed into a "monster" with brutal strength, which slowed her down and gave Buffy an advantage to slay her. Selke's death triggered a chain reaction that killed all of the other vampires who had drunk from her brew, and the new bloods were extinguished.[5]

Powers and abilities[]

  • Regeneration — Selke had her severely scarred skin healed into its previous appearance as soon as she first drank the bad blood.[3]
  • Durability — When Buffy hit a new blood with a hammer, the handle shattered in contact without harming the vampire.[1]
  • Strength — After drinking a poisoned bad blood, Selke mutated into a large bat-like "monster" strong enough to lift a car above her head and smash a wall with a punch.[5]
