Mutt was, with his friend Jeff, a vampire who immigrated to Sunnydale and settled there. Spike alerted Buffy when he saw them, but when Jeff and Mutt fled after being confronted by the Slayer. Spike claimed Mutt and Jeff were responsible for the train murders. Buffy deduced they were not responsible because they'd been in Sunnydale too long. It remains unknown if Spike was lying in order to spend time with Buffy, or he was given bad intel himself.
