In 1999, Amy, Michael, and Willow used the mark to aid Buffy. However, a demon took the appearance of two children killed with the mark drawn on their hands. Buffy found the mark on Willow's notepad, and she admitted the real utility of the mark. However, her admission prevented the protection from becoming established because the aimed person wasn't to know of the spell for it to have effect.[1]
Later that year, while discussing ways of reversing Giles's blindness, Spike picked up a book bearing the mark of protection on its cover.[2]
