Legal upgrade[1] was a medical procedure of cerebral alterations that Dr. Sparrow performed on Charles Gunn under the Senior Partners' request.[2] It granted Gunn absolute knowledge of all human and demon laws from every dimension,[3] fluency in some demonic languages,[4] strategy,[2] deductive reasoning,[5] knowledge of golf techniques,[6] and Gilbert and Sullivan's operas for elocution.[7]
According to Gunn, the upgrade didn't enhance his mental capacity, but merely "revved up some idling brain cells."[3] However, Dr. Sparrow initially had Gunn's neural path modification completely revert with time, so he could perform a permanent upgrade later in exchange for a favor.[2]
