Last Angel in Hell is a one-shot of the Angel comic book series. Written by Brian Lynch and illustrated by Stephen Mooney, it was originally published on December 1, 2009.

Synopsis[]

When L.A. went to Hell in After the Fall, so did thousands of screenwriters, one of whom wrote a movie based on Angel's experiences there. The first-ever Angel Annual presents an adaptation of Angel's travails, Hollywood-style, in Angel: Last Angel in Hell: The Official Movie Adaptation. By Brian Lynch and Stephen Mooney! Mooney presents two movie poster covers, one featuring the real Angel and company, the other with their Hollywood counterparts.[1]

Summary[]

The comic adaptation begins with a letter from the screenwriter of the Last Angel in Hell film, who relates that the inspiration for the story came from his own experience during the Fall of Los Angeles. The screenwriter also promises a sequel.

The film begins with an explanation of how a dinosaur was the first vampire on Earth. In the modern time, LAPD Detective Angel Cartwright and his partner Wesley chase a suspect down an ally. Angel shoots the suspect, but he gets up and reveals himself to be a vampire. Angel and Wesley are attacked by three more vampires and a vampiric T-rex.

Much later, on the day of his wedding to Sara, Angel speaks on the phone to his mother and mentions that Wesley was killed in the encounter. At the church, Angel finds two stakes wrapped in newspaper with texts that suggest he should kill vampires. Sara arrives at that moment and mentions that Angel was blamed for his partner's death, lost his job, began working as a private investigator, and became an alcoholic.

Sara expresses her love for Angel and reveals she is a vampire. She invited several vampires to the ceremony, who ate all the guests and are about to kill Mrs. Cartwright. The dying priest reveals the unabridged Bible prophesied that hell would come to Earth if vampires slaughter enough people; the prophecy is fulfilled with the death of Angel's mother.

Two months later, Angel and his dog are alive and hunting demons. Angel is in line at Doublemeat Palace when a group of demons enter the restaurant and pick out people to eat. Angel and George throw them out and start fighting them. However, they are interrupted by OverLorne, an evil demon lord, who in turn is interrupted by Gunn and Fred, who save Angel and his dog. They reveal they are vampire hunters and sent him the stakes on his wedding. They want Angel to join them, but he refuses.

Later, Angel breaks into Satan's mansion at a party to investigate and sleeps with a female demon in a back room. When Angel returns to the floor, he finds Sara, now going by the nickname "Spike," kissing Satan, who turns out to be an elderly demon. Satan kills more people and rejuvenate himself. Angel stops him halfway through, and demon bodyguards are sent after him. Sara fights Angel too and throws him out the mansion, warning him to stay away.

Angel realizes he can not defeat Satan on his own and turns to Gunn and Fred, who accept his proposal to work together. Gunn reveals that he is cursed and sometimes turns into a dragon. Fred reveals she is dyslexic.

Meanwhile, Sara reveals to Satan what she did with Angel. He laments how he is not sure if he can trust her and that he had been hurt before. Because Satan fells depressed, hell freezes over. Angel, Gunn, and Fred go back to the city and interrogate OverLorne at the threat of death. OverLorne reveals Satan is gathering all humans at a central place. Before he can tell more, the Devil's Army attacks them. They barely survive but realize a special dagger that Satan keeps on his body is the only thing that can hurt him. Preparing a big strike, the team breaks into a US Air Force Base to steal weapons.

At the square, in front of Mann's Chinese Theater, Satan has all humans gathered. Before he can carry out his plans, Team Angel attacks. Satan is unharmed but finds his dagger missing. He begins using magic to kill the people there but leaves Team Angel unharmed. Having consumed enough humans, Satan transforms into a giant sized devil. Angel tells Gunn and Fred that he will kill him without their help because it is too dangerous.

Sara stops Angel and reveals she stole the cursed dagger. They kiss and leave on the back of Gunn, who turned into a dragon, to fight Satan. Fred uses her electric gloves to distract Satan, and Angel plants the dagger in his chest.

By killing the Devil, the carnage is reversed and Los Angeles is restored. Angel decides to keep the team together and reveals Sara is pregnant, with whom they will name Connor if it is boy. The ghost of Wesley warns them however another danger: the Wolf, the Ram, and the Heart. Angel reassures him that the team will be able to handle it.
