Kathy Newman was a UC Sunnydale student and also a Mok'tagar demon. She was portrayed by Dagney Kerr.
Biography
Kathy with her demon face
Buffy and Kathy shared a room at the beginning of freshman year, and quickly grew on each other's nerves. Kathy was obnoxiously chipper, would play the Cher song Believe over and over again, and was especially anal about Buffy's phone usage. Buffy's hatred toward Kathy eventually grew into a psychosis, with Buffy convinced that Kathy was a demon and taking such measures as stealing her toenails so that she could inspect them for anything suspicious.
It wasn't revealed until the end of the episode that Kathy actually was a demon, and that Buffy's insanity was a side-effect of having her soul gradually stolen over several nights. Kathy was doing so because her parents were coming to return her to her dimension, and she believed that they would take whichever girl in the room didn't have a soul.
Thanks to Giles and Willow, however, the parts of Buffy's soul that Kathy had earlier stolen were restored while the two were in the middle of a fight. Immediately after the transfer was completed, Kathy's father arrived and forcibly took Kathy back with him.
With Kathy's departure, Willow, having been experiencing her own roommate problems, moved in with Buffy.
Powers and abilities
As a Mok'tagar, Kathy had the ability to drain the soul of humans through the Ritual of Mok'tagar. She also had regenerative abilities, as her toenails kept growing even after being cut. She also has enhanced strength as she was able to fight Buffy and nearly beat her.
