In 1997, she coordinated the cheerleader trials for the squad. Although, the candidates were falling under Catherine Madison's magical influence as soon as they entered the squad. During a routine, Buffy Summers, victim of a Bloodstone Vengeance Spell, stepped on her foot and threw her against a wall, so Joy kicked her out.
In the following academic year, Buffy was looking for Cordelia Chase, and asked Joy about her. The cheerleader called Buffy a loser, but e eventually answered after the Slayer posed threateningly against her. In 1999, after Joy graduated high school, she was succeeded by Cordelia as squad captain.
