Jessica Harris was the mother of Alexander "Xander" Harris and the wife of Anthony.[1]
Biography[]
Jessica lived in Sunnydale with her husband Tony and their son Xander. Their marriage was turbulent, and Xander later recalled camping outside on Christmas Eve to avoid their drunken arguments.[2] On one occasion, Xander invited Willow Rosenberg to dinner at the Harris residence and mentioned that Jessica was ordering Chinese takeout again. Willow then questioned whether the family even owned a stove.[3]
After returning from his post-graduation road trip in 1999, Xander moved back in with his parents, stating that he now slept in the basement and paid rent.[4] He later implied that his parents charged him for meals, telling Willow and Buffy Summers that he was provided food "for a price."[5] Xander withheld rent during a dispute with Jessica, who refused to allow him to install a lock on his basement door out of concern he might start having sex.[6] Jessica and Tony often engaged in loud arguments, which eventually led Xander to move into his own apartment in 2000.[7] He later avoided visiting his parents, referring to them as "scary."[8]
During Xander and Anya Jenkins' wedding preparations, Jessica expressed insecurity about her appearance and whether she would be included in family photographs. During the rehearsal, she attempted to remain polite despite increasing tension among the guests. At the reception, Tony became heavily intoxicated and embarrassed Jessica during his toast, implying that his marriage to her had driven him to drink. The situation escalated into a brawl between the Harris family and Anya's demonic guests, during which Jessica and Tony began arguing. Shortly afterward, Xander left the wedding venue, leaving Anya at the altar.[1]
In 2000, when Sineya attacked the Scooby Gang in their dreams, Xander experienced a nightmare set in his family's basement in which Tony accused him of being ashamed of his parents and claimed that Jessica was "crying her guts out" upstairs.[9]
Years later, when a Hamelin demon trapped Xander in an illusion of an idealized childhood, Jessica and Tony appeared affectionate and supportive. Xander recognized the illusion as false when Tony behaved kindly instead of drunk and abusive, causing the illusion to break.[10]
