James was a vampire and the lover of Elisabeth.
He and Elisabeth traveled with Angelus and Darla for a brief time while in France. After gettign into a fight with French soldiers, James and Angelus were cornered by Holtz. The two men escaped, with James kicking an injured Angelus off the horse, disgusted that he would betray Darla to save himself.
Unlike Darla and Angelus, who would abandon each other to save theirself, James and Elisabeth were completely devoted to each other, coming as close as demons can to love.
