Go Ask Malice: A Slayer's Diary is an original novel based on the U.S. television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was written by Robert Joseph Levy.
Go Ask Malice provides a backstory for Faith Lehane, begining several months before she becomes the Slayer and ending with her entering Sunnydale just prior to Faith, Hope & Trick. It could be said that Go Ask Malice is to Faith what The Origin is to Buffy.
Go Ask Malice is presented as a diary of Faith's recovered from the ruins of Sunnydale bus station. Therefore, it is also an in-universe document.
Behind the Scenes
- The book utilises many of the few details we receive in the series about Faith's past. It incorporates all three relationships she mentioned in Revelations to Buffy and the anecdote she tells the Scoobies in Faith, Hope & Trick about her wrestling a vampire's pet alligators.
- The title references Go Ask Alice (1971). The controversial book was an account of drug abuse. It is considered a classic of American young adult literature. In turn, the title of the book was named from the Jefferson Airplane song, "White Rabbit", which includes the lyrics, "Go ask Alice/When she's ten feet tall". Grace Slick wrote the song after noticing possible drug references in Alice in Wonderland.
- Robert Joseph Levy also wrote The Suicide King.
- Go Ask Malice is also of note because of the surprisingly few characters from the TV series that are included. Excluding Faith herself, the only other character to appear in the series was Kakistos, the Father, although Buffy was mentioned briefly in passing.
