Gene Rainey was a physicist experimenting on the Time Paradox, specifically carving out one infinitesimal space-time aggregate from all that surrounded it, or to the outside observer, freezing time.[1]
Biography[]
When he went to sing "All by Myself" at the Caritas, Lorne read his aura and was shocked to see his future role in an apocalypse.[1]
On the day of their first anniversary together, Gene overheard his girlfriend, Denise, tell a colleague that she was going to break up with him that night. Gene decided to "freeze time" while making love to her; effectively making that moment last for eternity.[1]
However, Lubber demons altered Gene's formula so that the bubble containing him and Denise would expand exponentially. The demons considered Gene the Golden Child, a messiah who would usher in the end of all human life.[1]
At the time, Lorne sought Angel's help to stop Gene, and they fought the Lubber demons protecting him. While Gene and Denise were encased in the bubble, Angel turned off the machine and undid the process. After Denise broke up with Gene, he admitted that he was afraid of losing his love and did not realize the full impact of his actions. Angel and Lorne persuaded Gene that things not working out was a part of life and he needed to move on.[1]
