Angelwings

Front Lines is the second issue of the Blood & Trenches comic book miniseries. Written and illustrated by John Byrne, it was originally published on April 1, 2009, by IDW Publishing.

Synopsis[]

Alone behind enemy lines, hunted by both sides, Angel discovers his worst suspicions are true when he learns of the dark forces massing in the Kaiser's troops-forces with an agenda all their own.[1]

Summary[]

Angel jumps through a window, runs to the nearby river, and jumps in the frozen water. Geoffrey Wyndam-Pryce tells his soldiers no to pursue Angel, as the river will bring him into German territory. Instead, Geoffrey visits Margaret to question her.

A few hours later, after the sun has set, Angel climbs onto shore again and finds himself on German territory. He runs into a group of five Germans; the rest of their men were slaughtered by vampires. One of them has been sired but not risen yet, so Angel goes to kill him. The men don't understand and thought Angel crazy. But they understand once the man rises as a vampire and kills one of them.

Angel saves them from the vampire soldier, and they head back to the camp, where all the other soldiers were killed, but there are no corpses. The vampires have been hidden under the snow, and they suddenly ambush Angel and the soldiers. A vampire called Crixus halts the fight, and he knows Angel's identity.

Crixus explains that vampires are organized under a leader who struck a deal with the German emperor. Angel and the other captives are taken to an abandoned nunnery, where Angel meets the leader, Kakistos, who recognizes Angel has a soul.
