The Footmen were demons who served the Gentlemen in their prowling for human hearts.
Description
The Footmen did all the grunt and muscle-work for their masters, such as restraining their victims while the Gentlemen cut out their hearts, and, when necessary, fighting. They resembled humanoid creatures with brownish, bandaged faces and wore unrestrained straight jackets. Unlike the Gentlemen, who were capable of hovering, the Footmen were barely able to walk upright.
Also unlike their masters, who could not be killed by anything other than a human scream, the Footmen could be killed by normal means such as having their necks broken.[1] Unlike with the Gentlemen, human voice isn't fatal to them, however still cause them severe pain.
Behind the Scenes
- Although never addressed by name in the series, Joss Whedon reveals the name of these demons in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD The Complete Fourth Season, mentioning them as the Footmen in both the "Hush" Featurette and "Hush" episode commentary.[2]
- The description of the video game Wrath of the Darkhul King refers to them as “the Gentlemen’s henchmen”, albeit a source with less canon value than the interview.
