Faith experienced a number of memorable battles and events as a Slayer and gained a Watcher to aid her. She described once being arrested after killing three vampires who slaughtered an entire bus full of Baptists leading to a preacher hugging her, despite her being in the nude and the temperature being 180 degrees. Another noteworthy tale included her encounter with a large, male vampire in Missouri who owned alligators as pets, forcing her to wrestle with one of them. According to Faith, it was her toughest kill.. However, at some point, Faith ran into the vampire Kakistos, who brutally murdered her Watcher. Unable to face him, Faith left Boston.

Faith arrived to Sunnydale during the start of Buffy's senior year. Buffy met Faith after witnessing her kill a vampire that she lured in an alleyway by the Bronze nightclub which Buffy and her friends were patronizing. Buffy's friends quickly warmed to Faith along with her Watcher Rupert Giles and mother Joyce, and Faith claimed her Watcher was currently at the Watchers Retreat in England so she came to Sunnydale in hopes of comparing notes to the "infamous Buff". As Kakistos followed Faith into Sunnydale, Faith revealed to Buffy what happened to her Watcher and was reduced to fear at facing her Watcher's killer. However, Faith managed to overcome this with the help of Buffy and finally killed Kakistos.

Faith felt like an outsider in Buffy's world even though she initially endeared herself to Buffy's mother and friends. Buffy resented Faith for "trying to take her life from her" in Faith's first days in Sunnydale, though the two reconciled after the dusting of Kakistos. Buffy, who was still recovering from the trauma of killing Angel, maintained emotional distance from Faith, and the Scoobies not inviting Faith to Buffy's intervention after their discovery of Angel's resurrection further contributed to a feeling of alienation from the group. Later, Faith took Buffy on a whirlwind tour of her way of slaying, ditching school to attack vampire nest during the day, dancing at the Bronze while attracting the attention of several men, and escaping arrest after being caught stealing weapons at a sports store. This eventually climaxed when Faith accidentally killed a human being, Deputy Mayor Allan Finch, an act that caused her to withdraw into denial..

When it became clear that Buffy intended to reveal what had happened, unable to handle the guilt, Faith told Watcher Rupert Giles that Buffy who had killed Finch. Giles immediately discerned Faith's lie, but played along to avoid pushing Faith too far. Xander (who Faith had recently and almost as an afterthought deflowered) arrived to Faith's motel room to reason with her, but she did not respond well: she nearly sexually assaulted him while strangling him. Angel arrived in time and took Faith to his home to try to reason with her, but just when it seemed that he was getting through to her, Faith's new Watcher, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, broke into the mansion and arrested Faith with the help of a special ops team sent by the Watchers Council. Isolated and bitter, she secretly turned to current Big Bad, the Mayor Richard Wilkins, filling the void of his "right hand man" that was left by the death of the vampire Mr. Trick, whom Faith had recently killed when he was sent to kill her. Though she initially functioned as a double agent, rejoining the Scoobies and undergoing tests issued by the Watchers Council while feeding the Mayor information, her betrayal was revealed through an elaborate plan concocted by Buffy, Giles, and Angel, whom had grown suspicious of her. After her true loyalties were revealed, Faith descended still further in her slide to isolation and betrayal, as she realized that she had completely lost Buffy and the Scoobies as friends. This brought her closer to the Mayor, who acted as both father figure and friend to the lost Faith.

Faith and Mayor Wilkins developed an affectionate, emotional closeness. The Mayor genuinely felt a father's love for the fatherless Faith and provided her with a new apartment, reinforcing her loyalties to him. While serving Mayor Wilkins undercover, she killed a smuggler and a bookseller demon. She was also ordered by the Mayor to murder Lester Worth, a geology professor who had valuable information related to the Mayor's ascension. Having been expecting a speech on how it was not too late for her to turn back, Faith was briefly taken aback before assaulting Willow.

In Los Angeles, Faith was approached by a pimp, Dick, and proceeded to beat him up and rob him. Faith rampaged through the city, causing a fight to break out at a nightclub and squatting in her victims' apartments. Faith was approached by Lindsey McDonald, Lilah Morgan and Lee Mercer from the evil law firm Wolfram & Hart, who had learned that a "rogue Slayer" was in town, and hired her to kill Angel in exchange for having all of the criminal charges against her in Sunnydale dropped and along with a desirable pay cheque. Faith further demonstrated her "evil" side to Angel by kidnapping Wesley and brutally torturing him, wanting to go through various forms of torture such as blunt, sharp, cold, hot and loud though showed no enjoyment of it. Angel came to the rescue and a vicious fight between him and Faith broke out. During the whole event, Faith insisted that he kill her because she's "bad". Faith, along with Angel, came across Nadira and her Slayers struggling to fight off zombified Slayers and Eyghon. They leapt into battle but "Giles" approached Faith, distracting her and leaving an opening. With the help of Nadira, she regained her senses and escaped with the other slayers while Angel stayed to fight off "Giles". An injured Eyghon escaped, prompting them all to regroup at Alasdair's; as they escaped, Nadira began to berate Faith for helping Angel again, but Faith quickly silenced her by reminding her of her own reckless actions and that she had endangered herself and the girls by going to Eyghon in the first place. Faith revealed she knew Eyghon's plan because of her brief moment of near possession. She explained that he wanted to re-create the zombie world kingdom without the magic but to do that he had to make a deal with Whistler, Pearl, and Nash. With this information, the Slayers were given double-edged weapons and Spike arrived under Angel's request to help fight Eyghon.

While planing for the confrontation at Alasdair's home, the party was plunged into battle when Eyghon and his zombified Slayers suddenly stormed the building. Eyhgon managed to overcome Spike's demon and possess him, but when he attempted to do the same to Angel, the three spirits within Angel's body made it impossible. Consequently, Giles briefly took control and decapitated Eyghon, killing the demon and instantly ending the battle. Angel collapsed in the wake of the fight, the three spirits within his body fighting for control. Faith denied Nadira's desire to kill Angel, and along with Spike, was forced to postpone their plan to resurrect Giles.

Easily shrugging the strange occurrence off, Faith and Angel confronted Alasdair for the magical artifacts that would ensure the resurrection a success. After some false accusations and distrust amongst each other, they managed to have him agree to their terms. She then had a emotional heart-to-heart with Angel, Faith sadly admitting to him that bringing just Giles back wouldn't fix everything during Twilight. He agreed, but Giles would be back and it was a improvement. As the resurrection incantation was finally reached, Faith and Angel were forced to fight against Whistler, Pearl, and Nash. Managing to buy time as they retreated (having gotten some of Alasdair's artifacts), Giles' body was bathed in magical energy, the resurrection now complete thanks to the chanting of Alasdair, Lavinia, and Sophie. While they stare at the sight in front of them, Faith appeared worried. Looking to Angel, she muttered, "What did we do?"

Despite all the cruel acts she had done to the Scooby Gang and others, she originally saw herself as the victim. Everyone ignored her and never acknowledged her like Buffy was, prompting jealousy issues and pent-up anger inside her. Her way of acting out was to either try to kill Buffy's loved ones or take it away from her for herself. Eventually, Faith grew out of her habit of "stealing" from Buffy and instead tried her absolute utmost to have her acknowledge her as a friend despite their troubled history.

*Angel — Faith's initial feelings towards Angel was pushed by both Gwen Post who manipulated her and Xander who hated Angel and was looking for an excuse to kill, he jumped to the conclusion that Angel was evil again and took Faith with him to confront him. The situation was eventually resolved and Faith tolerated Angel's presence. Allied with the Mayor, Faith initially tried to remove Angel's soul so that he would revert back to Angelus; however, Angel and Buffy united against her. *Spike — While temporarily inhabiting Buffy's body, Faith mercilessly flirted with and rejected Spike. When she later returned to Sunnydale to help the Scoobies fight against the First Evil, they revisited that conversation, with Spike remembering every word ("It's not the kind of thing a man forgets") and conversed easily, relating to each other on a personal level. They discussed how they have both been "dangerous" in the past, and acknowledged each others efforts toward redemption. This connection did not go unnoticed by Buffy, who was more than a little jealous of the pair's chemistry and fledgling friendship. Faith's complicity in the mutiny against Buffy led her and Spike to fight before he left the Summers' home, although they ultimately became allies once more in the final battle against the First. Three years later, Faith and Spike are reunited when Angel called in some help against Eyghon. Spike eventually started to flirt with her and while Faith was attracted to him herself, she declined his pass under the terms of not wanting to be a rebound to Buffy. Instead, she compared him to Angel like she had done in the past when they first officially met, much to Spike's indignant protests. Faith straightforwardly claimed that they're alike in still being in love with Buffy even though they left her, a point he reluctantly agreed with. When she finally got Spike to open up somewhat, she gave him supportive advice of moving on from Buffy before returning to the apartment to extract Giles' soul from Angel. However, when realizing he had chosen to sleep with Harmony, Faith lightly mocked his choice of a rebound to get over Buffy which Spike didn't take offense to. Spike and Faith seem to have a odd sort of friendship in their similar situations and characters with some physical attraction added to it. Some common points move closer to them, such as their certain sexual freedom, as well as a fascination for the rock music and the violence.

This remark earned a punch from Faith but Willow didn't seem to care, later bragging to Buffy proudly over her words. Willow once called Faith a "cleavagey slut-bomb" and mocked her usage of the phrases "wicked" and "five-by-five." Willow overcame her animosity towards Faith when the two helped re-ensoul Angel, and Willow then let her come back to Sunnydale to help with the battle against the First. When Buffy incorrectly told Willow that Faith had tried to kill her again, Willow proceeded to say, "Faith. Never been a fan." However, when Willow contacted Faith and Angel in London, Willow greeted her pleasantly. She even appeared to bond with her when Faith expressed her concerns and fears over what Angel was trying to do with Giles, seemingly now friends. Finishing their journey in Quor'toth, they said their goodbyes. Willow earnestly said that out of all of them, Faith had grown and matured the most, much to her surprise and gratitude. Faith and Willow eventually grew closer to the point where they talked and discussed matters amicably and friendly, like during the barbecue commemorating Faith's and Buffy's graduation at the police academy.

*Winifred Burkle — When Faith escaped from prison, recruited by Wesley for to capture Angelus, she met Fred and demonstrated a weak consideration, similar to her disdain for Willow. Five years later, when Fred was resurrected, Faith gradually welcomed her, helping to find a solution against Illyria. The two women eventually teamed-up to investigate vampiric murders on a campus.

*Nadira — Faith was able to relate to Nadira's situation, feeling vengeance and anger, Nadira later agreed to let Angel live as she planned to kill him for the loss of her squad. Nadira later followed Angel and Faith and attempted to help them again Pearl and Nash. She won her battle severely wounded and disfigured, and Faith was later seen by her bedside, hoping that she recovers.

*Wesley Wyndam-Pryce — Wesley was called in to replace Giles as Buffy and Faith's Watcher after Giles was fired. Given her avoidance of authority and experience with her first two watchers, Faith immediately took a disliking to Wesley who was quite pompous at the time. When Faith accidentally killed Deputy Mayor Allan Finch, Wesley brought in a Special Ops team to arrest her, interrupting Angel's nearly successful intervention, further driving her down the path to evil. After awaking from her coma and traveling to L.A, Faith kidnapped him, and brutally tortured Wesley for hours in various ways despite his initial desire to help rehabilitate her because she was simply a "sick girl". Faith expressed her contempt and grudge against Wesley, ultimately blaming him for her becoming a murderer. She ranted to him that if she had Giles instead, she would've been a better role model. She nearly succeed in killing Wesley until Angel intervened. After his torture at the hands of his former Slayer, Wesley then thought of her as only a monster and was repulsed when Angel chose to give her sanctuary, although he still chose to help her escape from a Council black ops team as he trusted Angel's judgement. Faith felt deeply regretful for torturing Wesley and saw there was no way she could apologize for it. About three years later, Wesley turned to the then incarcerated Faith when Angel lost his soul, believing that only she could handle the situation properly. Ironically, though not a Watcher anymore, Wesley took more of a Watcher/Slayer role during this time, exponentially more than he did when he was on the payroll, going to extreme measures to hone Faith's abilities and make sure that she kept focus. Faith remarked that she liked Wesley with his new look, commenting that it suits him, as the last time Faith saw Wesley, he still wore glasses and suits.

*Connor — When recruited by Wesley to fight Angelus, Faith met Connor. She demonstrated no consideration toward him, possibly because she learned that he tried to kill his father, and that the insubordinate personality of the boy reminds her of her own impulsive and murderous past. Four years later, Connor and Faith, having personally evolved, team up peacefully to go to Quor'toth.

After eight months in a coma, Faith set out to wreak her revenge on Buffy for ruining her life ("That's the thing about a coma. You wake up all rested and rejuvenated and ready for payback "). In the very last stages of her coma, Faith had frequent nightmares of Buffy coming to kill her again. She appeared to be deeply frightened of her, seeing Buffy as the villain and herself as a victim. Faith was shown to be outraged that Buffy had started a relationship with Riley Finn when she had tried to kill her to save Angel's life, reducing her "death" as meaningless damage. She mocked and provoked Buffy on the UC Sunnydale grounds, rejecting her attempts to reach out and help her. After a brief fight, Faith reminded her that she would get payback. When Faith later tied up Joyce. Faith ranted to her how Buffy had forgotten about Joyce and would not come back to help her. She connected this to herself even more strongly, angrily noting how Buffy had forgotten about her and moved on with her life without any need for either of them. This heavily implied that most of Faith's anger and desire to ruin her life came from feeling abandoned and a lack of appreciation from Buffy herself. Faith had always wanted her to acknowledge and regard her as a real friend under her jealousy and contempt.

Faith's jealousy of Buffy's life culminated when she stole Buffy's body by swapping bodies with Buffy. She greatly enjoyed taking advantage of the perks of having her body, though acted like Buffy poorly in many ways. Faith blew off the responsibilities Buffy so highly valued and mocked her "self-righteous, goody-two-shoes" behavior several times. She still strongly stuck to her initial views on Buffy's serious and "joyless" demeanor, describing her contemptuously as a "stuck-up tight ass with no sense of fun" to a thoroughly confused Spike. Faith had no qualms at all for taking advantage of Buffy's body to seduce and sleep with her boyfriend for "payback". However, after seeing her friends care for her and Riley loving "her"/Buffy, Faith started to draw on the remaining good inside her after seeing a news report about danger at a church. However, it was brief. Faith furiously punched Buffy almost instantly when they ran into each other to save the people in the church, projecting her self-hate over herself on the body Buffy was in. After the body swap was reversed, a tired and beaten Faith stole away on a train to Los Angeles.

After being taken in and comforted by Angel to come to terms with her guilt and the good still inside her, Faith was shown to be most upset and regretful over what she had done to Buffy. She said that Buffy was the first person who ever really tried to help her and be a friend, yet she had given her nothing in return. Buffy was furious after her "body swap" act and believed Faith incapable of redemption or remorse. Faith tried to apologize to her, only for Buffy to angrily threaten her. Buffy's animosity towards Faith increased when Angel jumped between them and defended Faith. Faith and Buffy had an angry confrontation on the rooftop in LA. While Buffy continued to lash out at her for taking everyone important away from her, and pushing her away every time she tried to help her, Faith argued that Buffy couldn't understand what it was like be lost, and have nothing but pain and hate in life. Again, Faith tried desperately to get Buffy to forgive her or at least allow her to make things right, but before getting an answer, the Council attacked. Despite the anger Buffy held towards Faith, when the Council attacked Faith, Buffy willingly fought by her side to protect her and personally took out one of the team. In the end, Faith turned herself in and went to prison as punishment for her crimes, including murder. Buffy had wanted this from the start, but never expected Faith would do it willingly.

When Faith returned to Sunnydale to help fight the First Evil, Buffy again accepted her as an ally although not before punching her. Faith tried to follow Buffy's lead, and was hesitant to become the leader after a brief mutiny against Buffy. However, Buffy surprised Faith by encouraging her to embrace the leadership role. After Buffy and the gang were reconciled, Buffy and Faith discussed their contentious history, and Faith concluded that the reason they had never gotten along was because two Slayers were never meant to exist at the same time. With this, Buffy and Faith finally made peace. Note: This article is about the Vampire Slayer. For other uses, see Faith.

Faith. Her name alone invokes awe. 'Faith'. A set of principles or beliefs upon which you're willing to devote your life. The Dark Slayer. A lethal combination of beauty, power, and death.
Andrew Wells[src]

Faith Lehane was a Slayer called in 1998[5] and the last one to be called by the original succession line abolished in 2003.[6] Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Faith had a difficult upbringing and life, which left her with various trust and emotional issues. Though she found some stability with her Watcher, the woman was murdered by the vampire Kakistos and Faith retreated to Sunnydale, where she became a friend and ally of Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang.[5]

However, numerous events and circumstances took a toll on Faith's better judgment and she defected to the side of the evil Mayor Richard Wilkins,[7] helping him to carry out his Ascension, able to find the stable father figure she always wanted. On the day before the climactic Graduation Day battle, Faith was critically injured by Buffy and put in a coma,[2] from which she awakened eight months later.[8] She proceeded to wreak even more havoc in Buffy's life and then attempted to kill Angel in Los Angeles as part of a deal with Wolfram & Hart.[9] However, this was a ruse by Faith in order to get Angel to kill her instead as Faith had actually become remorseful of her past deeds and wanted to end her life. Nevertheless, with help from Angel, she came to terms with her past and willingly surrendered herself to the L.A.P.D. to face the consequences of her actions.[10]

Three years later, Faith busted out of prison to assist Angel Investigations in containing the recently released Angelus,[11] subsequently returning to Sunnydale with Willow Rosenberg after Angel was re-ensouled[12] to assist the Scoobies in their battle against the First Evil and its army.[13] Furthermore, Faith was appointed the leader of the Scoobies after they lost confidence in Buffy's leadership,[14] only for Buffy to be accepted back as the leader when Faith's first plan led herself and several Potentials into a near-fatal trap.[15] After the First was defeated and multiple Potential Slayers were activated worldwide,[6] Faith initially stationed herself with the new Slayer Organization's Cleveland squad,[16] until she joined forces with Rupert Giles to prevent more Slayers from going rogue.[17]

After the ensuing Twilight crisis and the end of magic, which also resulted in Giles' death, Faith was bequeathed with all of Giles' property and possessions in accordance with his will.[18] She stationed herself in London, where she continued to assist a London Slayer squad, while working alongside Angel to tend to Giles' unfinished business.[19] Faith decided to stick by Angel when he wanted to resurrect Giles,[20] and the three fought against Whistler's plan to "save" the world while destroying millions of people. Faith then decided to leave Angel and London behind, needing time on her own to sort out her life.[21]

She worked some time assisting the Slayer company Deepscan in several missions[22][23][24] and helped Angel in his new team with the Magic Town in London.[25] Faith was eventually summoned in San Francisco and rejoined the Scoobies in dealing with the government's Safe Zones.[26] She participated of the battle of the Reckoning by their side, then joined the police academy along with Buffy, in order to become police officers of the supernatural division.[27]

When I was a kid, I used to beg my mom for a dog. Didn't matter what kind. I just wanted, you know, something to love. A dog's all I wanted. Well, that and toys. But mom was so busy, you know, enjoying the drinking and passing out parts of life, that I never really got what I wanted.

Faith was born in South Boston, Massachusetts, to alcoholic mother and father. Her mother used to read her Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go! before bed. "Nights she was sober enough, anyway."[16] Her father, Pat Lehane, was often absent during Faith's life, and always owing money to an Irish mob led by "Handsome" Jimmy Mulligan. Faith used to wear her father's Drew Bledsoe jersey,[28] becoming a New England Patriots supporter. In high school, Faith didn't have any real friends and later dropped out.[5]

Becoming the Slayer

On May 12, 1998, upon the death of Kendra Young, Faith obtained full power, becoming The Slayer.[29]

According to Faith, it was her toughest kill. However, at some point, Faith ran into the vampire Kakistos, who brutally murdered her Watcher. Unable to face him, Faith left Boston.[5]

Faith as she first arrives in Sunnydale.

Faith arrived to Sunnydale during the start of Buffy's senior year. Buffy met Faith after witnessing her kill a vampire that she lured in an alleyway by the Bronze nightclub which Buffy and her friends were patronizing. Buffy's friends quickly warmed to Faith along with her Watcher Rupert Giles and mother Joyce, and Faith claimed her Watcher was currently at the Watchers Retreat in England so she came to Sunnydale in hopes of comparing notes to the "infamous Buff." As Kakistos followed Faith into Sunnydale, Faith revealed to Buffy what happened to her Watcher and was reduced to fear at facing her Watcher's killer. However, Faith managed to overcome this with the help of Buffy and finally killed Kakistos.[5]

Faith felt like an outsider in Buffy's world even though she initially endeared herself to Buffy's mother and friends. Buffy resented Faith for "trying to take her life from her" in Faith's first days in Sunnydale, though the two reconciled after the dusting of Kakistos. Buffy, who was still recovering from the trauma of killing Angel, maintained emotional distance from Faith, and the Scoobies not inviting Faith to Buffy's intervention after their discovery of Angel's resurrection[30] further contributed to a feeling of alienation from the group. Although she disapproved of Faith's carefree attitude toward violence, Buffy still trusted Faith enough to leave her to protect her mother at Christmas[31] and was even shown being attracted by Faith's wilder way of Slaying[32] as the two, through slaying, began to grow closer.

Amends Buffy Faith

Buffy and Faith grow closer despite initial animosities.

Faith's trust issues and isolation heightened when her new Watcher, Gwendolyn Post, gained and abused her trust to obtain the Glove of Myhnegon; which led to Faith almost killing Angel and led to an all-out fight with Buffy.[30]

Later, Faith took Buffy on a whirlwind tour of her way of slaying, ditching school to attack vampire nest during the day, dancing at the Bronze while attracting the attention of several men, and escaping arrest after being caught stealing weapons at a sports store. This eventually climaxed when Faith accidentally killed a human being, Deputy Mayor Allan Finch, an act that caused her to withdraw into denial.[32].

When it became clear that Buffy intended to reveal what had happened, unable to handle the guilt, Faith told Watcher Rupert Giles that Buffy had killed Finch. She was briefly captured, but attacked them inside their armored car and escaped.[7]

Working for the Mayor

You know, I come to Sunnydale. I'm the Slayer. I do my job kicking ass better than anyone. What do I hear about everywhere I go? Buffy. So I slay, I behave, I do the good little girl routine. And who's everybody thank? Buffy.
―Faith, expressing her dissatisfaction[src]
Choices Wilkins Faith

Faith sides with the Mayor against the Scoobies.

Later, Faith kidnapped Buffy's best friend Willow Rosenberg and wanted to kill her;[33] Willow boldly stood up to her, telling her that, despite her rough life, she had a lot working with the Scoobies, and now that she was working for the Mayor, she was alone, friendless, and a "big, selfish, worthless waste." Having been expecting a speech on how it was not too late for her to turn back, Faith was briefly taken aback before assaulting Willow.

Faith stabbed

Faith gets gutted by Buffy.

In order to distract Buffy, Faith shot Angel with an arrow coated with the Killer of the Dead, a poison specifically designed to kill vampires. The only antidote was the blood of a Slayer, and Buffy visited Faith's apartment to apparently take her, dead or alive, intending to give Faith to Angel so he could drain Faith's blood, but Buffy only managed to stab Faith in the abdomen with her own knife, a gift from Mayor Wilkins. Taking advantage of Buffy's shock of stabbing her, Faith jumped from the apartment building roof onto a moving truck and escaped.[2] However, their fight left Faith in a coma, with doctors claiming that she would never come out of it. After saving Angel from death, Buffy and Faith, both unconscious manifested a psychic link through their powers and dreams, the first of which Faith reminded Buffy that even as a pure demon, Wilkins had a human weakness that would never go away, which she would exploit to lure the Mayor into a final trap. Faith was also the first to give Buffy a cryptic message about the arrival of Dawn Summers.[34]

After the coma

I know what it's like. You think you matter, you think you're a part of something, and you get dumped. It's like the world's still moving, but you're stuck. Like those animals in the tar pits. You're sinking a little deeper every day, and nobody even sees!

Faith goes after Buffy as soon as she wakes up.

Eventually, Faith regained consciousness months later. After learning what had happened while she was comatose, she confronted Buffy and Willow on the UC Sunnydale campus where Buffy was studying. Faith was angry at Buffy's attempt to sacrifice her to Angel, and even more so when she found out that Buffy wasn't even with him anymore. After a brief fight, Faith escaped from the approaching police officers who had come to arrest her.[8]

Faith was devastated further upon hearing about the death of Mayor Wilkins. However, Wilkins left with a magical device that allowed her to swap bodies with someone else so she could restart her life. Faith attacked Buffy's mother at her house and held her hostage. As Buffy was about to win the ensuing battle, Faith used the magical device to swap bodies with Buffy.[8]

Buffy, in Faith's body, was kidnapped by the Watchers Council Special Ops team to be taken to England, while Faith (as Buffy) planned to flee the country. Tara Maclay realized something was wrong and told Willow.[3] In the meantime, Faith flirted with the vampire Spike, and slept with Buffy's then boyfriend Riley Finn (essentially raping him), and discovered what it was like to be surrounded by loving friends and family. She was torn between her desire to flee and her sense of duty to rescue a group of churchgoers taken hostage by vampires. When she chose to save the hostages, Faith also encountered Buffy, who arrived on the scene with the same intentions. Buffy arrived in time to stake the last vampire and the two Slayers entered combat once more. During their confrontation, she savagely beat her own body, physically and verbally expressing her self-loathing. With Tara and Willow's help, Buffy managed to undo the body switch, and Faith fled Sunnydale by hopping on a freight train. Her meddling also left a problem in Buffy and Riley's relationship which was later resolved in an altered universe.[35]

Angel's assassin

Faithcrossbow

Faith attempts to assassinate Angel.

Faith was open with her confrontation to Angel, seemingly trying to kill him in public at an office building and approaching him at his detective agency.[9]

During the whole event, Faith insisted that he kill her because she was "bad." Angel repeatedly refused, and Faith eventually broke down crying, begging Angel to kill her, as it had been her plan all along.[9]

Sanctuary Buffy Angel Faith 02

Angel grants Faith protection, even from Buffy.

Angel began the task of saving Faith's soul, forgiving her and working to break down her emotional walls. He let her stay at his apartment where she was then attacked by a demonic assassin sent by Wolfram & Hart. Faith managed to kill the assassin but, staring down at her bloody hands, she then almost collapsed. Just as Faith began to feel remorse for her crimes, Buffy arrived, looking for revenge. In the meantime, the Watchers Council also showed up, intending to kill Faith, and Kate Lockley also came to Angel's apartment after learning from Lindsey McDonald that she was in Angel's custody. After Buffy and Angel saved her, Faith decided to surrender to the police and face the consequences for her actions.[10]

Faith was convicted for two counts of murder and received a life sentence, of which she'd serve at least twenty-five years. She found some level of stability in her prison life, noting that at least she had three meals a day and an occasional movie.[13] Although capable of escaping at any time and having developed a reputation among both the guards and her fellow prisoners as a force not to be trifled with, the penitent Faith chose to cooperate with the terms of her confinement, and was periodically visited by Angel. Though, she was once attacked by a fellow prisoner with a shiv attempting to build her reputation, but Faith refrained from killing the girl, instead only breaking her wrist.[36]

Escape from prison

Faith: “I'm not gonna kill him, Wesley. Angelus. I don't care what you thought you sprung me for. Angel's the only one in my life who's never given up on me. There's no way I'm giving up on—
Wesley: “I know. That's why it had to be you.

Salvage Angel Faith 02

Faith taking on Angelus.

Faith was attacked by a fellow prisoner named Debbie, an agent of the First Evil in prison; although Buffy and the Scooby Gang in Sunnydale were aware of the threat of the First's Harbingers of Death attempting to wipe out the Slayer line, they had neglected to warn Faith of the danger, believing that she would be safe in prison. Soon after, she was visited by Wesley who informed her that Angel had once again lost his soul and become the ruthless Angelus while Los Angeles was rendered into an eternal night due to The Beast, a powerful demon. Without hesitation, Faith broke out of prison, easily taking out the its guards and breaking through one of its windows, determined to save Angel, the one person who never gave up on her. Arriving in L.A., she easily slayed the first couple of vampires she had come across since being jailed, remarking it was "just like riding a biker."[11]

Word got out about her presence in L.A. while she quickly took initiative by setting up a hunting party consisting of herself as leader, Wesley, Charles Gunn and Angel's son Connor. During their outing, a vampire ambushed the group and Connor staked it before anyone could confirm if it was Angelus or not. After having already warned Connor at the hotel that she was in charge and it was a salvage mission, not a kill, Faith challenged Connor about his continuing intent to kill Angelus. Connor starts fighting with Faith in a seeming attempt to show off his prowess (to assert himself as the leader, his plan to be the way to go) and she comments he has special powers, she gets it, but proceeds to dominate him in the fight and ends up with Connor on the wrong end of a crossbow. She sends him back to the hotel since she no longer trusted him to follow through with her plan.[11]

She confronted the Beast and fought him while Angelus watched from the sidelines, commentating. Despite her Slayer powers, Faith's efforts were no match for the near-invulnerable Beast who beat her badly. However, before he could harm her any more, the Beast was killed when Angelus stabbed him with his own bone, bringing back the sun, much to Angelus' own displeasure.[11] Angelus then moved in for the kill, but Faith managed to break open the window above her, surrounding and protecting herself with sunlight.[37]

Orpheus Wesley Faith Angel

Faith after saving Angel.

Having completely recovered, Faith and Wesley set out to find Angelus, hitting several demon business to do so. When finding him, she battled and defeated Angelus. When she refused to kill him, he regained the upper hand and bit her.[37] Unbeknownst to Angelus, Faith had injected herself with a powerful mystical drug known as Orpheus, that incapacitated both of them. While Willow worked on a spell to restore Angel's soul, Faith and Angelus astral projected into Angel's subconscious. The drug almost killed Faith who accepted her fate, but during the mental link with Angel and Angelus, she was persuaded by Angel not to give up, because for them, the act of atonement never ended.[12]

Re-joining the Scoobies

After Angel's re-ensoulment, Faith left with Willow to return to Sunnydale to help Buffy and her allies battle the First Evil. Like Angel, Faith switches from a more "passive" redemption to an "active" redemption. Rather than remaining in jail, out of society, she chooses to help fight "the good fight" and make the world better.[12]

Chosen Faith 01

Faith reluctantly leading the Potential Slayers.

She initially followed Buffy's command even though she had some doubts about Buffy's decision-making skills. Buffy was less than enthusiastic about Faith's return, but recognized that reinforcements are desperately needed, and Faith showed dedication to being "one of the good guys."[13] After a botched attempt to fight the First's minion Caleb, the Scoobies and Potential Slayers lost confidence in Buffy's leadership and appointed a reluctant Faith as their leader over her, as they preferred to be under her freer wing as she took them to the Bronze, despite encountering a group of corrupt police officers.[14]

This decision, however, literally blew up in their faces when Faith's first plan ends up leading them right into a trap,[15] leaving many girls, including Faith herself, critically injured. However, Buffy arrived and saved them from a Turok-Han attack, once again becoming the undisputed leader. When the Potentials complained about Faith's decision, stating that they believed that God had punished them for shunning Buffy and following Faith, Buffy defended her, and she and Buffy finally made peace, noting that the friction in their relationship was perhaps due to the fact that under normal circumstances, two fully-activated Slayers were never supposed to co-exist.[38] During her stay in Sunnydale before the final Battle at the Hellmouth, Faith had a brief sexual tryst with ally Robin Wood, the son of Slayer Nikki Wood. After (jokingly) shunning Faith's sexual experience, Robin dares Faith to let him surprise her, an act he accomplishes by surviving the battle.[6]

But there are gonna be other gigs out there. If I stopped stabbing and started, I don't know… playing social worker to the slayers. Maybe I could help walk a few bad girls from the brink.

HopeLYonee

Faith as Hope Lyonne.

A year and a half after the destruction of Sunnydale, Faith remained in touch with Robin who led a squad of new Slayers in Cleveland, calling on Faith to perform slayings that would be considered disturbing. In the time that had passed after Sunnydale's destruction, Faith apparently began to grow tired of the life of a Slayer, attempting to purchase a forged passport on two separate occasions. Giles, also a member of Slayer Organization, approached Faith and struck up a deal: if she would assassinate Lady Genevieve Savidge, a rogue Slayer who had been killing other Slayers and could potentially bring about the apocalypse, Giles would arrange for Faith to relocate permanently to any country of her choosing, with the promise of never having to resume Slayer duties.[16]

To get close to Savidge, Giles educated Faith in British formal etiquette and taught her how to speak with a British accent.[16] Under the disguise of British aristocrat Hope Lyonne, Faith befriended Savidge, whom she nicknamed "Gigi." Trusting "Hope," Gigi revealed she was a follower of Twilight and planned to kill Buffy,[1] making Faith resent Giles for risking her life just to protect "his golden girl"; at this point, he had also lost contact with her. The plan began to go awry when Buffy herself was summoned from her Scotland headquarters by Roden, an Irish warlock and Gigi's informal Watcher, for Gigi to kill. They fought, but when Buffy gained the upper hand on Gigi, Faith jumped into the fray and tackled Buffy out the window, blowing her cover in the process.[39]

Buffyvfaith

Faith vs. Buffy yet again.

Immediately assuming that Faith had switched sides again, despite Faith's attempts to convince her otherwise, Buffy attacked her. In the ensuing fight, Faith nearly drowned Buffy in a swimming pool in a fit of rage, before managing to stop herself. After Buffy was teleported back to Scotland by Willow, Gigi attacked Faith, enraged and grief-stricken.[39] Faith saw her relationship with the Mayor on how Gigi might had fell for Roden; although, in the ensuing battle, Faith accidentally impaled Gigi on her own axe. Faith begged Roden for him to heal Gigi, but he refused, saying that Faith should be his new Slayer and better than Savidge. He said that together they could make Buffy disappear forever, and told Faith of a "promised clemency from the coming purge" of Twilight if he killed her. Faith refused, and the two began to battle.[17]

As Roden was about to deliver the killing blow, Giles stabbed him in the back then killed him with one of the warlock's own spells. The following morning, Faith and Giles had returned to his apartment, where he handed Faith her passport out of the country. Faith accepted, but renounced her plans for retirement. She stated that there were more slayers out there like Gigi and herself, and that she believed she could help them walk over from the path they were on, likening herself to a "Slayer social worker." Giles agreed with the idea and decided to be Faith's partner in this, given that he and Buffy weren't on speaking terms anymore after the whole ordeal.[17]

Faith and Giles work together in Hanselstadt.

While helping a young stray Slayer named Courtney, Giles and Faith heard of a "Slayer Sanctuary" in Hanselstadt, Germany. There, Giles encountered the former Watcher Duncan Fillworthe claimed vampires did not dare to enter the town because they knew it contained an army of Slayers. As Giles argued a stalemate was not a solution to the vampire problem, Duncan revealed that in fact the town was feeding the Slayers to a demon, and the fear of the demon was what really kept the vampires away. Giles went to warn Faith as Duncan states this was the fate that Slayers deserved for rejecting the Watchers Council. Giles found her already in combat with the demon, who fed on her guilt for letting a vampire escape during one of her earlier patrols. Duncan intercepted Giles, but the demon devoured Duncan, Giles saved Courtney, and Faith killed the demon. The stalemate ended, Giles and Faith rallied the reluctant townspeople against the coming vampires, telling them if they wanted to live, they would have to fight.[40]

Seeking refuge from Twilight's followers, Faith, Giles, and the rest of the Slayer Organization gathered in Tibet,[41] where she and Buffy reconciled once again, and their powers were temporarily stripped in order to better hide themselves.[42] Faith, Giles, and Andrew Wells were eventually captured by the masked Twilight leader,[43] and became the first ones to discover his true identity: Angel.[44]

During the Twilight crisis, in which this new dimension was born and began taking over Earth, Faith participated of the ensuing battle at the ruins of Sunnydale, fighting hordes of placenturian demons who intended to destroy it. Meanwhile, in a chamber underground, Giles was murdered by a possessed Angel and Buffy destroyed the Seed of Wonder, effectively causing the end of magic.[45] In his will, Giles left Faith all of his belongings, savings, and property, which would allow her to retire and be free from the constant violence that plagued her life. Faith immediately took to this, but with a catatonic Angel residing with her, reasoning that her understanding of redemption meant that she was the only person who could tolerate him at that point.[18]

AngelandFaithLondon1

Angel and Faith team up in London.

After Giles' death, Faith got her life together in London, where she took a group of Slayers under her wing, and cared for Angel as he succumbed to guilt. In an attempt to help him recover, she began reading him Giles' Watchers Diaries, which followed the events of his life in great detail. After Angel heard about a little girl who was being used as a host by a demon, he suddenly recuperated, donning his redemptive mindset once again. After dealing with the demon and saving the child with Angel, Faith went to the Brixton district of London, where she met with Nadira and her other Slayers. At a downtown club, they discussed the recent death of Nadira's squad of Slayers at the hands of a pair of demons named Pearl and Nash, who were working for Twilight. Nadira expressed an intense desire to kill Twilight, and although Faith didn't reveal that she was living with him, she did seem to understand Nadira's vengeful sentiments.

When she returned to Giles' old residence, she questioned Angel about his time as Twilight; she particularly wanted to know if he had murdered Giles in his right mind, or if he had been completely overtaken by Twilight's influence. He admitted that although Twilight had been controlling him the moment he'd broken Giles' neck, there had been times when he'd been completely himself, and he couldn't deny his involvement as a result of details. He subsequently divulged his desire to bring Giles back from the dead, to which Faith reacted with shock.[19] She later asked him how he expected to resurrect someone who had died a natural death, and he told her that he would work with Giles' soul rather than his body. Though she still didn't think it was entirely possible to resurrect Giles, she understood that his new goal was the only thing keeping him going, and wanting to be there for him, she agreed to help. Angel's research into using Mohra demon's Blood of Eternity to resurrect Giles was cut short when they discover that, without magic in the world, using the Mohra blood had disastrous consequences. Despite this, Angel resolved to continue his search to find a way to bring back Giles, assuring Faith that he was grateful for her presence as she provided him with the one thing he lacked as Twilight; a friend that he trusted to tell him when he was going too far.[46]

AF9-v2-00

Faith faces Drusilla in power of a Lorophage demon.

While investigating rumored vampire attacks that could also be attributed to a Lorophage demon that Giles encountered during his Watcher training, Faith discovered information about a rumored vampire cult leader known as Mother Superior. While Angel and Faith investigate the Mother Superior's cult, discovering that Mother Superior was actually a then sane Drusilla, Faith's Slayers were contacted by Faith's father, Pat Lehane.[47]

When her father made his presence known to her, Faith, at first, rebuffed him despite his claims that he's changed and was now sober. Angel attempted to dissuade her pessimism and she confronted him about his relationship or lack-thereof with his son Connor. Angel told Faith that although he can't change who he is, her father can. Having a change of heart, Faith ran after her father and invited him inside her home. There, they shared small talk about the many possessions in the flat and Pat revealed that he knew that Faith was a slayer and confessed his desire to have a new start with her. However, Pat later revealed that he had only come to Faith to ask for her help in getting him out of financial trouble after he made various deals with crime bosses. Although he asked Faith to kill them, Faith and Angel attempted to simply pay off the debt, only for the boss's refusal to abandon such a potentially lucrative source of income to force Angel and Faith to use more violent methods, Faith accidentally cutting off the man's arm. Although Angel threatened the crime boss to ensure that they were left alone, Faith was left increasingly troubled by her difficult relationships with her father-figures as Pat suggested that she would never be anything more than a killer simply because she had the Lehane temper, prompting her to return to Drusilla to get rid of her pain.[28]

Although she initially accepts Drusilla's gift, Angel convinced her to reject it as the loss of her pain has now deprived her of the strength that she had gained since she tried to force him to kill her. To restore the emotions of Drusilla's cult, Angel forced the Lorophage demon to feed on itself, expelling the trauma that it had absorbed and returning it to its victims. Although Drusilla fled, her insanity restored and foretelling a dark future, Angel and Faith made an uncertain peace with each other, Faith appreciating Angel's continued belief in her even with her restored pain, also guessing at his plan to restore Giles to life by using a Tooth of Ammuk to absorb pieces of Giles's soul.[48]

Faith and Angel dealt with the arrivals of Lavinia and Sophie (Giles' aunts) as well as the most unexpected one: Willow.[49] Seeking a way to restore magic to the world, Faith embarked on a journey to Quor'toth with Angel, Connor, and Willow.[50] Over time, Faith noted how being in this dimension could be affecting everyone's personalities into violence so took it upon herself to make sure no one went off the deep end.[51] Despite this, she briefly felt the negative pull as she contemplated killing Angel for dragging her into everything but quickly gained control of herself. She had also gave Angel a pep talk, telling him that she wished her own father loved her half as much as he loved Connor. Discovering that the hell dimension was named after the Old One Quor'toth, they were forced to fight him. Eventually succeeding enough to survive, Faith and the others are startled to see Willow's eyes turn black, due to absorbing too much dark magic.[52]

AF-13-00b

Faith and Willow in Quor'toth dimension.

Faith was surprised and anxious to see Willow's sudden turn to Dark Willow. After the witch fought against Quor'toth and soon after attacked Connor, her and Angel devised a solution to return Willow back to normal. He consequently bit her, which caused the dark magic to leave her. However, Angel soon became affected struggling to not drain too much of her blood. He begged Faith to kill her and she immediately almost proceeded to do just that, only to be stopped by both Connor and Willow. Soon after, Faith said her goodbyes to Willow (who attempted to give her some kind of warning before being cut off by the Quor'toth Old One waking up) and returned back to Los Angeles. Faith briefly discussed their adventure and how they were almost completed with restoring Giles' soul. Meanwhile, Faith's squad was attacked by Drusilla, and eventually told Nadira they had discovered that Faith had been aiding Angel all along.[53]

She traveled with Angel to Peru to get the magic item called the Crown of Coils because of it's regenerating abilities before flying back to London. Upon returning, Faith and Angel went to dig up Giles' burial place for his body. However, they are stunned to find out that his corpse was no longer there. Puzzled and worried about this development, they talk it over with Lavinia and Sophronia. They soon come to the conclusion that Giles' body had to have been missing before they buried it as the grave was undisturbed. The discussion was interrupted when Nadira and her slayers showed up. After being called a liar who had been harboring Angel, she pointed out that he had been possessed by Twilight so it wasn't really his fault. Faith, however, was visibly shocked and sad that Marianne had been killed by Drusilla, noting that she had been the kindest girl and was always there for her fellow slayers. Faith accepted Angel's explanation of it not being possible to bring her back and the Slayers left in pursuit of another option, completely cutting off all ties to Faith and her desire to help them.[54]

Seeing her Slayers turn their backs on her, Faith finally lost it. In a fit of frustration, she turned on Angel. Faith bluntly and harshly blamed him for all of this, reminding him forcefully that she had done everything she could to help him when no one else would. She then went on to tell him that after his plan with Giles, she was done. He owed her, end of story; Angel agreed to her terms. After having trouble entering the funeral home with the security, they sought out Lavinia and Sophie for answers, finding out that Ethan Rayne was listed in the guest book for the funeral. Faith and Angel are initially confused and puzzled by this since he had been killed during the Twilight crisis by General Voll but due to their insistence, Angel quickly figured out that it was Eyghon the Sleepwalker who had possessed Ethan and now possessed Giles.[55]

AF9-17-01b

Faith and the London slayer squad.

Faith, along with Angel, came across Nadira and her Slayers struggling to fight off zombified Slayers and Eyghon. They leapt into battle but "Giles" approached Faith, distracting her and leaving an opening. With the help of Nadira, she regained her senses and escaped with the other slayers while Angel stayed to fight off the zombie of Giles. With this information, the Slayers were given double-edged weapons and Spike arrived under Angel's request to help fight Eyghon.[56]

Faith denied Nadira's desire to kill Angel, and along with Spike, was forced to postpone their plan to resurrect Giles.[57]

In order to restore Angel to sanity, she and Spike went to retrieve the Essuary — a magical item within which they could store Giles' soul. At Alasdair Coames' instruction, they went to a cemetery, where they dispatched several soul-consuming demons called Enders. As they battled the demons, Spike came dangerously close to having his soul devoured — Faith, empathetic to his fears of becoming soulless again, expressed that he could sit out the battle if he wanted, but Spike chose to help her instead. As they delved into the cavern in search of the Essuary, Spike casually flirted with Faith, who rejected him, stating that she was "nobody's rebound." She then took the opportunity to compare Spike to Angel, much to the former's protests. Faith enforced her observation by mentioning how both of them had fallen in love with Buffy, and subsequently chosen to leave her despite their continued love for her. Spike revealed that he was still in love with Buffy, and Faith, not even the least bit surprised, gave him advice before finally collecting the Essuary. Back at the apartment, Faith and the others performed the ritual to contain Giles' soul in the Essuary. Faith then did a heartfelt speech about her relationship with Giles, admitting that she now wanted him back for herself as well.

The following morning, Faith was comically disturbed to see Spike exiting her bathroom shower with Harmony, due to her intense dislike of her. She light-heartedly joked over Spike's choice of rebound before going to breakfast with Angel.[58]

Just as they were preparing for the ritual, Faith was surprised to receive a call from Buffy on her cell.[59] She answered and the two discussed their current problems. Buffy explained to her that she needed some help with Dawn. Much to Buffy's annoyance, Faith did not remember her sister. The conversation ended, she explained to an overtly eager Angel what Buffy had called about only for Spike to become impatient and shocked at her casual mention of Dawn. Having already lost any memory of her due to her essence fading away, she did not buy any of his attempts to remind her who Dawn was. Eventually becoming even more annoyed when Angel too expressed a confusion over who Dawn was, Spike took off to go back to San Francisco to go save Dawn.

Looking to Angel, she muttered, "What did we do?"[60]

Faith was instantly panicky and anxious over what they had done by resurrecting Giles, worrying that the interruption Whistler had caused somehow damaged it. As Alasdair requested them to focus their thoughts on Giles only for the ritual spell to work, Faith focused on her travels with him and the placement of a father figure he had taken for her. Eventually, this caused the resurrection to work. However, not without some glitches. Giles was brought back as a young boy, with the memory and demeanor of adult Giles. Extremely mystified and shocked at this development, Faith decided with Angel that they would find a way to fix it. She rekindled her close bond with Giles immediately, only for him to be depressed, confused over what he was meant to do now. Faith tried to comfort him and attempted to remind him that she needed him; however he brushed it off and insisted that Faith nor anyone else really needed him anymore before walking away from her on the rooftop. After finding the exact whereabouts of Whistler thanks to Giles, Faith and the others prepared to fight for their lives to save the world.[61]

Faith engaged in a fierce battle against Pearl, somehow managing to briefly distract Whistler from spreading the magic enough for his hat to fly off. Nadira arrived on the scene soon after, and took Nash off Angel's hands for her revenge. Faith immediately protested against her involvement in the fight, but Nadira ignored her. Struggling to remove herself from Pearl's grip, Faith was forced to watch helplessly as Nash seemingly finished off Nadira for good with his laser eye beams, severely burning one side of her face. Unable to properly respond to what happened, she forced herself to resume her relentless fight with Pearl. After Giles landed a hit on Nash, and caused him to drop the dangerous plague ball, Faith and the others tried to capture it before it could affect anyone below. Ultimately, they were too late and the magic plague dropped on the spectators, consequently transforming them into mutants, much to the group's horror.[62]

Ordered by Angel, after getting in some good hits to Nash, Faith ran to retrieve the ball of pure magic. However, Nash and Pearl oppose and distract her progress. Faith engaged in a vicious battle with the two siblings, who had briefly forgotten about the plague orb in their desire to kill her. Suddenly, a half-burned Nadira regained brief consciousness and stabbed Nash in the back as vengeance. Recovering from her shock, Faith jumped in and killed Nash for her, managing to get the pure magic ball while she was at it. She then bended over a passed out Nadira, attempting to use the pure magic to heal the slayer. When Giles and Alasdair regretfully told her it was likely not possible to save her, Faith reluctantly gave up and prepared to give it back to them only for Whistler to take it for the release of the magical plague.[63]

While Angel fought against Whistler, Faith was shocked to see that Nadira was still somehow alive. She attempted to comfort Nadira by telling her that, having killed Nash, she succeeded in avenging her sisters, only to be surprised when Nadira bitterly remarked that it was never worth it to begin with. She stood by her throughout the most of the battle as well as afterwards, tending to her in a tent with Giles (where Nadira was confirmed to be alive, but was turning into something else due to the plague orb). Faith helped Angel and the others with the mutated citizens briefly before deciding to leave him and London, realizing that were still some parts of her life she needed to sort out on her own. Considering the idea of joining Kennedy's organization Deepscan, Faith traveled with Giles to San Francisco.[21]

Deepscan

With Giles having returned to the Scooby Gang and Angel still working in London, Faith attempted to find a place for herself by working with Kennedy's new all-Slayer security organization. However, she began to feel that the job wasn't for her when her first assignment turned out to be to act as bodyguard for Billy Rage, a demon pop star who seduced underage girls; Faith only learned about both after she had accepted the assignment, although Kennedy was unaware of the second. Although Faith began to feel that this new role wasn't for her, she accepted a new assignment from Kennedy when she learned that she was being asked to find the currently-missing Riley Finn.

In Suriname Faith joined Tonia Marsh' unit together with Mai, Nell, and several others. A briefing by Major Billings and Reese Zane informed them that Walt Zane and his crew had gone missing during an expedition to find plants in the South American jungle. Samantha Finn was part of the follow-up squad, but when contact was lost with them as well Riley went after his wife and ended up missing, too. Shortly after Faith's unit arrived in the jungle and started the mission they were attacked by a group of new vampires, who killed Nell and Tonia. As Kennedy had made Faith Tonia's second in command, this meant that Faith had become unit leader.[24] After they rescued Riley and discovered that Walt Zane had been turned into a vampire, Reese staked him and asked Faith to join her as head of security for a new branch of Zane Pharmaceuticals in London to analyze the changes caused by the magic plague.[64]

She subsequently assisted Angel in dealing with the resurrected Winifred Burkle, offering Zane Pharmaceuticals' resources in analyzing Fred and helping Angel contain Illyria when she was awakened by their examination. While Angel moved to San Francisco to help Buffy and the gang deal with Archaeus, Faith remained in London to investigate vampire activity at a school, discovering that the cause of the attacks was Drusilla. Faith clashed with Drusilla numerous times and fought her in a sword fight before being defeated by her, Drusilla comments that Faith may have been slowed down by her minions, however, its revealed that Faith was merely distracting Drusilla and her vampires so that Angel could rescue Nadira.

Faith later rejoined the Scoobies in San Francisco in dealing with the government's Safe Zones.[26] In the following year, she fought again by their side against Harth Fray and his demon army,[65] and eventually participated on the Reckoning battle. When Buffy was fated to end up in a hell dimension, forever fighting demons until the end, Faith attempted to volunteer to take her place.[66] After defeating Harth, Faith joined the police academy along with Buffy, in order to become police officers of the supernatural division.[27]

Personality

She's like this cleavage-y slut-bomb walking around 'Ooh, check me out, I'm wicked-cool, I'm five-by-five.'
―Willow Rosenberg describes Faith[src]

Unlike her predecessor Kendra, who was Buffy's polar opposite, Faith was, in essence, a mirror image of Buffy, a representation of what Buffy would have been like had her life circumstances been different; whereas Buffy grew up in a loving home surrounded by caring friends and family, Faith was raised by abusive and neglectful parents and suffered from various issues. Faith often suggested that killing gave her a drug-like euphoria, and even suffered from addictive withdrawal symptoms when she was not able to inflict pain. Quitting violence was equated with quitting alcohol.[10] She smoked and displayed signs of promiscuity and an inability to share trust and intimacy with men, being baffled when they attempted to share it with her, and describing herself as "a loser magnet" who attracted kleptomaniacs and slackers. She was later responsible for Xander losing his virginity, and slept with Buffy's boyfriend Riley, after switching bodies with Buffy herself. However, Angel was eventually able to help her move past this partially, and she was able to share a friend-level of intimacy and trust with him without introducing a sexual element.

In the last stages of her time on the side of evil, Faith displayed hidden degrees of abandonment and unappreciation.

Faith often had a prominent wild streak to her and enjoyed partying, drinking, and having sex. Faith's shown a frequent preference to flirtatiously dance with men at clubs when she wanted to relax and have fun.[5][5][32][3][14] She could also be careless and irresponsible, which was shown when Faith gave the Potential Slayers alcohol despite most of them being underaged (which Buffy was furious about later).[14] In contrast to Buffy's more serious and tense disposition, Faith treated matters more lightly. She was generally carefree and laid-back, causing her to view Buffy as being "wound too tight.[5][13] Faith revealed she didn't really like being leader, but can be one given the chance. Faith often called some people by the first letter of their first name, like "B" for Buffy. At times Faith showed to be somewhat unlettered, not knowing the definitions of "ingest,"[2] "remuneration,"[5] and "Achilles' heel."[15]

Faith often used the expression "five by five" to mean everything was well. Tara once asked what it even meant, and Willow replied: "See?! That's the thing! No one knows."[8] She had her own personal, unique slang and it was revealed that she had inherited her catchphrase of the word "wicked" from her father.[28]

Faith frequently proved herself to be impulsive. For example, when she and Xander found Giles unconscious, Faith immediately assumed that Angel was responsible despite Xander's reservations.[30] She was also known for her quick, easily irritated nature, something her father described as the "Lehane temper." Faith had deep issues with parental figures, due to being raised by neglectful, alcoholic parents while she was young. Nonetheless, she had a deep yearning for a family. This yearning had caused her to be used by so many people so readily because of her desperation for someone to be there for her, something Faith had bitterly mocked over in a fit of distress and pain.[28] Consequently, she continued to have many trust issues throughout her life and it took her a while for her to truly open up and embrace someone, fearing that she would be betrayed or hurt if she did. Giles had taken note of this during his time with Faith, describing her as showing hostility to those she didn't trust or didn't know but on the one hand, she would display extreme loyalty to those who were close to her and those who cared for her.[54]

In her current role as Angel's partner, Faith has shown a more cautious and responsible side to herself, recognizing the danger of her old impulsive nature, serving as Angel's sounding board to ensure that he didn't repeat his mistakes as Twilight by taking it upon himself to cross lines that he should have left alone. She developed a more mature aspect than when she was younger, using her knowledge of atonement and the thrill of killing to rehabilitate slayers who needed a purpose in life or in the case of Nadira, stop before going down the path of evil and murder that had almost destroyed her.[67] While she did take up responsibility for her slayers as well as being Angel's anchor to keep him from going too far, she nonetheless still frequently complained about such pressure and very much preferred being the "irresponsible" one she once was.[20][68][53]

Through her maturity, Faith's natural promiscuous tendencies with men began to dull slightly. After drinking together with some guys, Faith realized she didn't sleep with any of them and light-heartedly said she couldn't tell if she maturing or just getting used to being rich.[20] She also displayed higher standards for herself in flings and one-night stands, denying Spike's hit on her since she didn't want to be reduced to a rebound. Soon after, when he mentioned she wasn't as fun as she was before, Faith somewhat sarcastically responded with "Turns out I matured."[58]

However, it was revealed that she still carried a surprising degree of self-loathing over herself and that some part of her believed that she deserved every bad thing that had happened to her still despite her time in prison and efforts to atone. Faith had usually hidden and repressed it with a casual, almost carefree demeanor. After the return of her father and when she had impulsively cut off a man's arm without thinking, Faith suffered a severe lapse in judgment. Overcome with unworthiness, guilt, and a belief that she would never be anything but a murderer, she in a moment of weakness went to Drusilla to remove her pain. Angel had eventually made her come to her senses and restore her determination to live through the pain, telling her that he admired her strength at coping with her past.[48]

— Faith and Joyce[src]

Faith was a young woman with dark brown hair and eyes, standing at 5'5 tall. Her hair was either in loose ringlets or flat. Prior to her reformation, Faith's look typically involved namely leather jeans and jackets and tight tops, often in dark clothes as to clash with Buffy's more "good girl" appearance. Her makeup was often dark and had red or maroon lipstick and she would wear accessories ranging from chain necklaces and chokers to belted bracelets and studded belts. After reforming, Faith's appearance changed: she took to wearing more color and her makeup became much less intense and dark. During her coma, her hair grew longer and became noticeably wavy and lighter.

She also possessed a signature arm tattoo.

Powers and abilities

Well, when I'm fighting, it’s like the whole world goes away and I only know one thing: that I'm gonna win and they're gonna lose. I like that feeling.
―Faith[src]

Faith was a Slayer, and thus had the usual powers of such, including a healing factor and superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes.

FaithKickingGigi

In her earliest days as a Slayer, Faith employed a more brawler-type fighting style than Buffy, who was more prone to Asian martial arts. Faith tended to be more aggressive and reckless, using her Slayer brute strength rather than speed or agility as Buffy did. Due to their identical powers, Buffy and Faith were evenly matched in their various brawls until Buffy narrowly bested her.[2]

Over time and as she matured and stabilized Faith has developed a more well-rounded fighting style. Faith has shown herself to have equal or superior fighting skills to Angelus (although she was drugged and pulling her punches during her fight with him); Faith was also able to easily take out Connor. Also while in London mentoring displaced slayers, Faith was the only one who was able to defeat an enraged Nadira whereas a squad of fully trained slayers failed or couldn't handle an out-of-control slayer.[12]

Relationships

Romantic and sexual

Eventually I had to face up to my destiny as a loser magnet. Now it's strictly get some and get gone. You can't trust guys.
―Faith[src]

Before initially coming to Sunnydale, Faith experienced a number of failed relationships with "losers" who destroyed her confidence in men: "Ronnie: deadbeat. Steve: klepto. Kenny: drummer." She also mentions a bullwhip owning former sexual partner who used to have her dress as a schoolgirl for him although this may be one of the previously mentioned trio. Although she was sexually aggressive, Faith avoided emotional intimacy.

 • Alexander Harris — After his relationship with Cordelia ended, Xander found himself helping Faith fight a demon one night.[69] After the battle, Faith took Xander back to her motel room and had sex with him; taking Xander's virginity. After Faith had gone rogue and killed a man, Xander felt like he could talk to her because they had a connection, which Buffy disputed by saying that the evening probably meant more to Xander than to Faith. He did confront her but Faith was extremely annoyed that people were trying to reach out to her. She started to attempt to have sex with Xander and strangle him, before being hit in the head with a baseball bat by Angel. Faith mentioned that she never wanted a relationship like Xander thought that she did, and was merely with him for the sex.[7] When in Buffy's body, Faith had bluntly commented on his performance, saying to Anya that she wouldn't "wouldn't want to cut into those seven minutes."[3] When she came back to Sunnydale, Xander never said anything about when she tried to kill him, but he was willing to work with her and become allies against the first. When some Potential Slayers complained about Anya discussing her sex-life with Xander, Faith told them she reminded Anya that she was Xander's first, which, as she claimed, "makes her shut the hell right up."[14] About three years later, Faith absently mentioned her one-night stand with Xander while in Quor'toth with Angel, Connor, and Willow. She described it as one of the things she only did when she was crazy, along with picking fights with bikers.[53] They still work together and still becomes friends, after the battle with the first, but he was disappointed that Giles left his estate to her and not to Buffy.
 • Riley Finn — During her brief time in Buffy's body, Faith seduced Riley, who was unaware that she was not Buffy. While her behavior was initially overly provocative, Faith was overwhelmed when Riley declared his love to her. She freaked out immediately, unsure how to react to it actually having meaning to him more than just her usual one-night stands. However, Faith was then somewhat moved by his sweet gesture. The morning after, she hesitantly left him, still not used to nor ready to embrace emotional intimacy.[3] After Angel comforted her and encouraged her to face up to her mistakes, Faith expressed some awkward guilt for sleeping with Riley in Buffy's body.[10] She attempted to apologize to him when they meet up again when Faith was working for Deepscan, he tells its Buffy she should apologize to.
Touched Faith Robin

Faith and Robin become close.

 • Robin Wood — After Faith's return to help Buffy and the Potential Slayers fight the First Evil, Buffy also enlisted the help of the principal of Sunnydale High School, Robin Wood, the only known child of a Slayer. Robin became interested in Faith and the two become physically intimate.[15] Prior to the final battle, Robin expressed his annoyance that Faith viewed men as mere sex objects and her claims that all men would eventually leave. Faith apologized if it seemed like she was blowing him off (which she apparently intended to do). When Robin jokingly claimed their experience didn't "rock his world," Faith got rather upset, then Robin promised to surprise her if they survived and she agreed to let him try. After the battle at the Hellmouth, Robin lay in the bus with Faith by his side and briefly passed out. Faith reached out to close his eyes and he surprised her by surviving, for much of her relief.[6] While appearing to still keep in a touch, they are no longer together, Faith having referred to him as her ex-boyfriend a year and a half later.[16]

Parental

Faith: “What I need is to get my act together. Stop looking for a daddy figure who will take care of me, and tell me where to go, and what to do, and make me feel all special. All that ever did was bite me in the ass. It's not like I ever had it anyway, so what's the big loss?
Giles: “It is a tremendous loss. It's something every child deserves, something you never had. It's as important to grieve as it is to move on.
— Faith and Giles[src]

Romantic and sexual liaisons aside, Faith's most profound relationships were formed with paternal or maternal figures who she quickly latched onto. The most obvious example of this was the Mayor, although prior to her alliance with him, Faith fell into similar situations with her watchers. Over the years, she eventually formed a stable relationship with Buffy's former watcher, Rupert Giles, seeing him as the best father figure she ever had.[58] Faith noted that she has "daddy issues" and craves a father figure and will then place their interests above her own, overriding her morals such as the case when the Mayor has asked her to kill Professor Worth. Faith however somewhat moved past this, still wanting a father figure but no longer willing to allow herself to place her morals and ethics second.

 • Pat Lehane — Faith's alcoholic father. Although he claimed that he had done what he could to help her, such as making deals with Irish crime families to get the money he needed to raise her, Faith had nothing but contempt for his failure to ever be there for her when she needed him, to the point where she noted that the Mayor was a better father than him as the Mayor genuinely seemed to care about her.
 • Faith's Watcher — Faith had fondness for her original Watcher, the first person who gave her a stable home, purpose in life and acting as a parental figure. When she was murdered by the ancient vampire known as Kakistos, Faith returned to her cold kill-or-be-killed worldview.[5]
 • Joyce Summers — Faith appreciated Joyce's kindness more than Buffy did, stating she was "really cool" and noting her as one of things Buffy was lucky to have which Faith didn't.[5] During Christmas, Faith presented Joyce with a gift, despite her bashfully claiming it was "crappy." Faith also protected her when Buffy went out to deal with the First Evil.[31] When she held her hostage, Faith liked Joyce's attitude against her and showed sympathy to the fact Buffy left Joyce when she went to college.[8] After switching bodies with Buffy, Faith seemed to have little concern over Joyce and was more distant, feeling uncomfortable when Joyce expressed pity for her and gave her a loving hug intended for her real daughter.[3]
 • Gwendolyn Post — Faith was quick to latch onto the sinister Gwendolyn Post, who briefly posed as her new Watcher. A misled Faith gave her loyalty to Post, who nurtured Faith's feelings of isolation from the others. When she witnessed Post's confrontation with Buffy and Angel, Faith sided with her new mentor, and was shaken to learn the truth about Post's evil plan. This betrayal of her hesitant trust reinforced her belief that she can never rely upon anyone else and consequently started her path of descent.[30]
Touched Faith Wilkins 01

The First manifests as Wilkins to Faith.

 • Richard Wilkins — Through their alliance, Faith found the stable, paternal figure she craved, which swiftly changed her flirtation with evil to a desire to do anything to make Mayor Wilkins proud of her. She was loyal to him before her coma, helping him prepare for his Ascension.[2] When she woke from her coma and discovered that Buffy had destroyed him, Faith went on a rampage. Before his death, Mayor Wilkins recorded a heartfelt speech to leave for Faith, and he made provisions for her to come into possession of a magical device upon his death if she should ever wake up, which Faith later used to temporally switch bodies with Buffy.[8] A few years later, the First Evil manifested itself to Faith in Mayor Wilkins' form, and she revealed that she still feels fondness for him, saying that he used to be "like a dad" to her, regardless of the fact that he was evil.[15] Faith stated that he "was the last guy who ever put her in a dress" and that "the dude may have been a bit of a snake but he wasn't a dog." Faith thought that it was possible that he may have been exploiting her, but it did not feel like that.[17] She revealed that it was hard to look back on her time with him and feel anything but loved, but most people saw only an "evil scumbag," to the point where she considered him a better father than even her own biological father.[28] However, when Mayor Wilkins resurfaced during the Reckoning, Faith refused to rejoin him and even fought against him[65].
B8-24-00b

Faith and Giles form a partnership.

 • Rupert Giles — When Faith landed in Sunnydale, she befriended Giles and saw him as her unofficial Watcher, along with Buffy. Faith also initially praised his physical appearance.[5] However, she wasn't particularly close to him at that time and eventually became an enemy when she cut ties from the Scooby Gang to join Mayor Wilkins. While she was torturing Wesley and throwing in his face his complete failure as a Watcher, Faith commented that if Giles had been her Watcher instead, then she wouldn't have became a murderer.[5] After Giles' falling out with Buffy, he began working with Faith after they took down Lady Genevieve Savidge.[17] The two grew very close due to the training and their shared troubled pasts and strained relationship with Buffy, traveling around the world helping rogue slayers. Faith even let down some of her natural walls around people and admitted her regret for killing Professor Worth, triggering Giles to do a heartfelt speech about redemption and forgiveness.[20] The two became so close that his in his will, Giles left all of his belongings, property, and savings to Faith upon his death, allowing her to live the life she wanted, though Faith told Buffy that he still considered the latter as the "number one son."[18] She soon started to help Angel bring back Giles, continually feeling back and forth over it. The other part of her wanted to help him and Faith herself heavily missed him but the other was worried that it would only end in disaster as Giles had told her the consequences of bringing someone back from the dead.[20][68] Eventually, she started to regain more hope in this plan and supported it a lot more, admitting to herself while they were planning to extract his soul from Angel and putting it in the Essuary: "I need you, G. I don't have to tell you about my daddy issues, but I've always wished I told you this… You're the best I ever got."[58] When everyone was required to focus on Giles to properly resurrect him, Faith recalled their travels together and once again reiterated that she truly needed him back. Although confused and disbelieving of Giles' reversion towards a 12-year old, that did not stop her from feeling happy that he was brought back to them and she quickly reignited their bond. Giles was unhappy and lamented over his lack of purpose and seemingly directionless life. Faith attempted to make him feel better and convince him that she still needed him. However, Giles was firm. He had seen everything she had done with Angel to bring him back while he was inhabiting his body and was truly under the impression that Faith did not really need him like she insisted nor did anyone else for that matter.[61] Once Whistler was defeated, Faith was angry that Giles refused to take his mansion back since he was no longer dead while he insisted she should keep it. She was annoyed with this, reminding Giles that she could take care of herself. After deciding to return to California and possibly join Kennedy's organization, Faith was happy and touched that he wanted to travel with her. However, she was disappointed and upset that he was returning to Buffy rather than spending time with her.[21]

Friendships

AF25A

Angel and Faith become a team.

 • Angel — Faith's initial feelings towards Angel was pushed by both Gwen Post who manipulated her and Xander who hated Angel and was looking for an excuse to kill, he jumped to the conclusion that Angel was evil again and took Faith with him to confront him. The situation was eventually resolved and Faith tolerated Angel's presence. Allied with the Mayor, Faith initially tried to remove Angel's soul so that he would revert back to Angelus; however, Angel and Buffy united against her. After awakening from her coma and fleeing Sunnydale, Faith arrived in Los Angeles. After getting hired by Wolfram & Hart to assassinate Angel, Faith accepted it without any hesitation as she had her own plan. She soon started to get frustrated when Angel was holding back on her and was not completely up to "game." In an effort to draw out his anger, Faith attacked Wesley and Cordelia. Angel and Faith got into a brutal and ferocious fight against each other, smashing windows and ruining furniture. When Angel still refused to kill her, Faith had a breakdown, desperately begging him to kill her and put her out of her and everyone's misery. Angel took pity on her and comforted her as she cried.[9] Faith struggled with her murderous impulses and crushing guilt, needing to be repeatedly comforted and reassured by Angel that she could survive it. When she had slipped out that Buffy had a new boyfriend, Faith was sympathetic to Angel and was able to say she was sorry. Angel had faith in her redemption and had even protected her against a furious Buffy. Through him, Faith was able to accept punishment for her crimes and willingly turned herself in.[10] Angel visited her periodically during time in prison, frequently discussing redemption and if they'd ever find it, developing a very strong friendship.[36] When Faith learned that Angelus had been released, she broke out of prison without hesitation to help capture and re-ensoul her friend, stating that Angel was the only person in her life who never gave up on her. During a brief session in Angelus' mind, Faith witnessed a direct confrontation between Angel and Angelus, and later battled Angel's son Connor to stop him from staking Angelus before he can be re-ensouled. Their relationship also appears unique in all of Faith's relationships with men, in that, while she believes that all men in her life will eventually use her, she views Angel as the one man who will never do this, this contributing to her decision to care for Angel after the Twilight crisis though he killed Giles while under Twilight's influence. The two lived and trained together in Giles' flat in London. Faith initially joined Angel in doing Giles' unfinished business and give him someone to count on, only for him to completely floor her when he expressed his goal to resurrect Giles.[19] Faith was angry and immediately made it clear she was against it, as Giles had told her once himself it was impossible to bring someone back from a natural death. However, reminding herself how Angel had next to no one at the time due to the fallout of Twilight, Faith changed her mind and decided that he needed someone to keep from going off the deep end. If she did not help Angel, he'd be a loose cannon.[20] Faith once again expressed sympathy towards Angel after a talk with him about becoming human, seeing how he saw no happy ending for himself.[70] She would secretly attempt to use Mohra's blood on him to turn Angel human and save him from himself, only to be interrupted at the last second when she discovered doing so would literally kill him due to the end of magic. While she doubted he could accomplish his obsession with resurrecting Giles, Faith accepted the responsibility of watching his back and kept Angel from doing something dangerous or stupid.[46] After a traumatic visit from her father, Faith suffered a relapse and went to Drusilla's Lorophage demon to remove the pain and hatred she felt for herself. However, she regained her senses when Angel encouraged her to live through the pain and that she was not the same person she was before, again establishing him as the only person who always believed in her and never used her. When her trauma was restored by Angel's killing of the demon, Faith was furious and told him to leave her alone. Once recovering, she agreed that they don't give up on people and gave him her full support in bringing Giles back to the living.[71] Taking reluctant responsibility for him and his actions, Faith discussed with Angel before they traveled to Quor'toth and advised him to not sacrifice his own son for Giles. Unsurprisingly, Angel became angry and denied her assumption, throwing in her face that she had nearly killed her father so she shouldn't be giving him advice about parenting; Faith was hurt by what he said.[68] During their journey through Quor'toth, she noted how Angel tended to ruin her life and complicate everything. Due to the affects of the dimension, Faith briefly contemplated cutting his head off and going back to Earth. However, she regained her senses, reminding herself that she was not like that anymore. While they continued fighting demons, she gave Angel a clumsy pep talk and said it was progress that he was trying to save one guy instead of the whole world as well as saying that she admired his willingness to leave his quest for his son, admitting to him that she wished her own father loved her as much as he loved Connor. He was very grateful for this. However, she did also state Angel was "kinda obsessed."[53] When Angel became overwhelmed with blood lust, Faith took it upon herself to be the one to kill him if this ever happened, only for Willow to intervene and save him. When discussing with him what had happened in Quor'toth, she expressed again expressed her dislike of such responsibility, but did not ignore it.[53] When Angel was briefly trapped in his own body when Giles' soul manifested within him — leaving him with Angel, Angelus and Giles inside him — Faith immediately rejected the possibility of simply staking Angel to stop Angelus getting out in favor of the riskier maneuver of confronting the soul-eating Enders to recover the Essuary as a means of extracting Giles' soul, also defending him against Nadira and other Slayers by stating that Angel wasn't Twilight or Angelus, but the man who saved others. After Whistler was defeated, although Faith decided to move on after so many things that she had built for herself were destroyed during her time working with Angel, Angel assured her that he understood her reasons, expressing confidence that she would be fine in whatever path she chose and that he would be available if she decided to come back.
 • Spike — While temporarily inhabiting Buffy's body, Faith mercilessly flirted with and rejected Spike.[3] When she later returned to Sunnydale to help the Scoobies fight against the First Evil, they revisited that conversation, with Spike remembering every word ("It's not the kind of thing a man forgets") and conversed easily, relating to each other on a personal level. They discussed how they have both been "dangerous" in the past, and acknowledged each others efforts toward redemption. This connection did not go unnoticed by Buffy, who was more than a little jealous of the pair's chemistry and fledgling friendship.[13] Faith's complicity in the mutiny against Buffy led her and Spike to fight before he left the Summers' home,[14] although they ultimately became allies once more in the final battle against the First.[6] Three years later, Faith and Spike are reunited when Angel called in some help against Eyghon. When he became temporarily insane, they both work together and form a brief partnership to retrieve the Essuary from soul-sucking Enders. Eventually, they discuss their love lives. However, when realizing he had chosen to sleep with Harmony, Faith lightly mocked his choice of a rebound to get over Buffy which Spike didn't take offense to.[58] Spike and Faith seem to have a odd sort of friendship in their similar situations and characters with some physical attraction added to it. Some common points move closer to them, such as their certain sexual freedom, as well as a fascination for the rock music and the violence.
Choices Willow Faith 03

Faith takes Willow as hostage.

 • Willow Rosenberg — When Faith first arrived in Sunnydale, Willow was not fond of her for many reasons. One reason was that Buffy initially spent more time with Faith than with herself, causing Willow to feel left out of the "Slayers only" attitude her friend had been projecting.[32] After Xander had slept with Faith, she was visibly hurt by this realization, and when she began to go rogue, Willow explicitly asked the other Scoobies why they were trying to help her, stating that, since Faith had taken a human life and tried to pin it on Buffy, and had also tried to strangle Xander to death, she believed that the smartest thing to do would be to simply turn her over to the police or the Watchers' Council and be done with it.[7] When Willow got kidnapped by the Mayor, she bravely confronted Faith over her actions, stating that she did not have to become this, even going as far to say she was too far gone to be saved. This remark earned a punch from Faith but Willow didn't seem to care, later bragging to Buffy proudly over her words.[33] Willow once called Faith a "cleavagey slut-bomb" and mocked her usage of the phrases "wicked" and "five-by-five."[8] Willow overcame her animosity towards Faith when the two helped re-ensoul Angel, and Willow then let her come back to Sunnydale to help with the battle against the First.[12] When Buffy incorrectly told Willow that Faith had tried to kill her again, Willow proceeded to say, "Faith. Never been a fan."[72] However, when Willow contacted Faith and Angel in London, Willow greeted her pleasantly. She even appeared to bond with her when Faith expressed her concerns and fears over what Angel was trying to do with Giles, seemingly now friends. Finishing their journey in Quor'toth, they said their goodbyes. Willow earnestly said that out of all of them, Faith had grown and matured the most, much to her surprise and gratitude.[53] Faith and Willow eventually grew closer to the point where they talked and discussed matters amicably and friendly, like during the barbecue commemorating Faith's and Buffy's graduation at the police academy.
 • Winifred Burkle — When Faith escaped from prison, recruited by Wesley to capture Angelus, she met Fred and demonstrated a weak consideration, similar to her disdain for Willow. Five years later, when Fred was resurrected, Faith gradually welcomed her, helping to find a solution against Illyria. The two women eventually teamed-up to investigate vampiric murders on a campus.
 • Nadira — Faith was able to relate to Nadira's situation, feeling vengeance and anger, Nadira later agreed to let Angel live as she planned to kill him for the loss of her squad. Nadira later followed Angel and Faith and attempted to help them again Pearl and Nash. She won her battle severely wounded and disfigured, and Faith was later seen by her bedside, hoping that she recovers.

Other

 • Wesley Wyndam-Pryce — Wesley was called in to replace Giles as Buffy and Faith's Watcher after Giles was fired. After awaking from her coma and traveling to L.A, Faith kidnapped him, and brutally tortured Wesley for hours in various ways despite his initial desire to help rehabilitate her because she was simply a "sick girl." Faith expressed her contempt and grudge against Wesley, ultimately blaming him for her becoming a murderer. She ranted to him that if she had Giles instead, she would've been a better role model. She nearly succeeded in killing Wesley until Angel intervened.[9] After his torture at the hands of his former Slayer, Wesley then thought of her as only a monster and was repulsed when Angel chose to give her sanctuary, although he still chose to help her escape from a Council black ops team as he trusted Angel's judgment. Faith felt deeply regretful for torturing Wesley and saw there was no way she could apologize for it.[10] About three years later, Wesley turned to the then incarcerated Faith when Angel lost his soul, believing that only she could handle the situation properly.
 • Connor — When recruited by Wesley to fight Angelus, Faith met Connor. She demonstrated no consideration toward him, possibly because she learned that he tried to kill his father and that the insubordinate personality of the boy reminds her of her own impulsive and murderous past. Four years later, Connor and Faith, having personally evolved, team up peacefully to go to Quor'toth.

Antagonistic

 • Kakistos — Kakistos was the first major enemy Faith fought, similar to Buffy against Lothos. Faith was particularly traumatized when he killed her first Watcher, and was the main reason Faith came to Sunnydale, trying to escape him. Faith killed Kakistos when he attacked Buffy.[5]
 • Drusilla — Faith was very cautious when confronting Drusilla, who — by killing Kendra —, activated Faith as Slayer. When they met for the first time, Drusilla being sane, used a Lorophage demon to absorb trauma from depressed people.[47] She proposed this treatment to Faith, who was in a state of despair.[28] However, when the Slayer found that Drusilla planned to "help" Angel the same way, she fought the vampire.[48] One year later, this antagonism was amplified when Drusilla newly insane, tried to bite her and was siring an army. In contrast with Kendra Young, Faith frequently taunted Drusilla, mocking her regarding Spike and Buffy's relationship. Drusilla was often destabilized by Faith's commentary. Faith fought Drusilla in a sword fight to distract her so that Angel could rescue Nadira, Drusilla displayed greater skill with a sword than Faith and nearly killed her until Faith showed her text message from Angel, allowing her to strike the startled Drusilla and flee. In contrast to her previous fight-style with impulsivity against vampires, Faith acted with psychology against the insane vampire.[73]

Buffy Summers

Faith: “There's only supposed to be one. Maybe that's why you and I can never get along. We're not supposed to exist together.
Buffy: “Also, you went evil and were killing people.
Faith: “Good point. Also a factor.

Buffy Summers and Faith Lehane: Two sides of the same coin.

The bond that Faith shared with her fellow Slayer was complex and unique. They had unique insight into each other's personality and the burdens that they shared, but they disagreed about what it meant to be a Slayer. Buffy was alienated by Faith's enthusiasm for violence and lack of responsibility, and Faith did not understand why Buffy compartmentalized her destiny as if it were a job. The First Evil later commented that Faith always wanted Buffy to love her. Additionally, Faith was jealous of the life Buffy led, surrounded by friends and family. Buffy, never one for rules herself, was somewhat drawn to Faith's rebellious nature,[32] but was horrified when Faith descended into reckless abandon and accidentally killed a man. After they became enemies, Faith and Buffy still shared a fundamental bond, sharing a series of dreams while Faith was in a coma. During these dreams Faith gave Buffy a clue to the Mayor's weakness and predicted the appearance of Dawn Summers.

Faith had always wanted her to acknowledge and regard her as a real friend under her jealousy and contempt.[8][15]

Faith had no qualms at all for taking advantage of Buffy's body to seduce and sleep with her boyfriend for "payback." However, after seeing her friends care for her and Riley loving "her"/Buffy, Faith started to draw on the remaining good inside her after seeing a news report about danger at a church. However, it was brief. Faith furiously punched Buffy almost instantly when they ran into each other to save the people in the church, projecting her self-hate over herself on the body Buffy was in. After the body swap was reversed, a tired and beaten Faith stole away on a train to Los Angeles.[3]

While Buffy continued to lash out at her for taking everyone important away from her and pushing her away every time she tried to help her, Faith argued that Buffy couldn't understand what it was like to be lost, and have nothing but pain and hate in life. Buffy had wanted this from the start, but never expected Faith would do it willingly.[10]

However, when Buffy was transported to London where Faith had gone undercover in order to defeat a homicidal Slayer, she jumped to the conclusion that Faith had turned evil again and proceeded to attack her with Faith getting the upper hand and nearly killing her in an act of desperation.[39] Buffy, infuriated and hurt, subsequently fell out of speaking terms with Giles because of his partnership with Faith. Later, Buffy and Faith made peace again when they were forced to get rid of their powers, appearing to finally develop a somewhat strained friendship.[74]

After the destruction of the Seed of Wonder, Faith told one of the Slayers she guided that her relationship with Buffy was "complicated."[75] Buffy later called Faith from San Francisco to help her with Dawn's condition, only to have Faith express confusion over who Dawn was. Frustrated, Buffy promptly hung up on her.[59][76] The two were reunited when Faith, affiliated to the Deepscan, came in the Scooby Gang's aid against new vampires in Santa Rosita. At the occasion, Buffy received her amicably and invited her to stay,[77] although Faith couldn't help but feeling left out by Giles's choice in staying with Buffy.[78] Some time later, Faith went once again in their aid through Deepscan, this time in San Francisco, to investigate the Pandora Project. Happily surprised by her arrival, Buffy hugged her, to much of Faith's discomfort, and gave her the Scythe, while Faith promised it would be temporary.[26] She indeed returned the weapon to Buffy as soon as she recovered her Slayer powers, and, after the Big Bad was defeated, she stayed with the Scoobies in a barbecue. Faith continued to help Buffy after these events, including dealing with the Reckoning. Faith and Buffy enrolled in the police force together.

Behind the scenes

 • Faith's surname was unrevealed throughout her run on both Buffy and Angel. Joss Whedon announced in January 2005 that Faith's surname was "Lehane" and this would be used in all future products, starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer Roleplaying Game. The name appears in its books and is considered to be canonical, having been used in additional material including Buffy Season 8. Whedon explained at the time: "There was this role playing game or something. They said she hadda have a last name for her so I chose Lehane 'cause I wanted something southie, just as you thought."[79]
 • Over the course of both television series, Faith's slay count includes around 17 vampires, 6 demons, and 3 humans, making a total of 26 kills in all.
 • While developing the character, Douglas Petrie took inspiration from Elektra Natchios of Marvel Comics: "For inspiration for Faith, I read Elektra Lives Again about a hundred times. In a different, teen, punkier context, Faith is so much like Elektra."[80]
 • Faith's signature knife, given to her by the Mayor, is a Gil Hibben 1999 Jackal — the same knife used by Praetor Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemesis.
 • Buffy and Faith are a very popular femslash pairing; writer Douglas Petrie was well aware of the "lesbian subtext" when writing.[81] Eliza Dushku herself has stated: "I think Faith probably swing both ways, she had a definite thing for Buffy. There were a lot of innuendos, there was a lot of heat there."[82]
 • Eliza Dushku has no tattoo on her right arm, the one sported by Faith (a tribal design) is just painted. The tattoo was spoofed in the movie Bring It On, in which Dushku's character is told she cannot join the cheerleading team due to the tattoo on her arm. Dushku then wets her fingers and rubs out the tattoo, showing it to be fake.
