Get the double treat, that’s the double sweet, oh it’s hard to beat, when the meat meets—

Doublemeat Palace was a fast food restaurant chain with franchises all over California.

Buffy Summers was briefly an employee of the local Doublemeat Palace in Sunnydale. In 2003, it was destroyed along with the entire town following the battle at the Hellmouth.[1]

Like how the cow and the chicken come together even though they’ve never met. It’s like Sleepless in Seattle if Meg and Tom were, like, minced.

“Why, that's a Doublemeat Medley!”

Doublemeat Palace’s specialty was the Doublemeat Medley. As the manager Manny Rocha explained it to Buffy, the Doublemeat Medley was “a pure beefy patty above the mid-bun and a slice of processed chicken product below the mid-bun, plus pickles, and the secret ingredient.” However, Willow Rosenberg discovered that, on closer inspection of the burger, it was actually made of vegetables; it was a formed and textured vegetable-based meat-like product, suitable for grinding that was blended with large amounts of rendered beef fat for flavor. Therefore, the secret ingredient in the beef was really beef.[2]

Vampires themselves found those who ate a Doublemeat burger inedible.

The restaurant also served fries, nuggets, coffee, soda, shakes, and cherry pie, among others. A small coffee and a cherry pie cost a dollar ninety-two, and the breakfast 99 cents.[2]

Employees

You’ve seen us in your city or small town across the American West. You’ve ordered our delicious food, from our happy employees! But now you’re seeing it all from a different way, you’re seeing it from behind the counter! Because you’ve just become part of the DoubleMeat experience!

“You’re part of the Doublemeat experience!”

The doublemeat employees were much less enthusiastic than the introductory video claimed. Many were monotone, emotionally traumatized and disgruntled. In Sunnydale, the Wig Lady, as it was nicknamed one of the regular costumers, took advantage of the high turnover of employees, devouring them in her real demonic form with no one considering the disappearance an strange event.[2]

Los Angeles

The Doublemeat Palace takes Wolfram and Hart’s place in Los Angeles.

After Angel and what was left of Angel Investigations reversed the fall of Los Angeles, Doublemeat Palace started to build their Los Angeles branch just where the Wolfram & Hart Los Angeles branch used to be.[3]

Doublemeat Palace was then involved in a product placement deal with Last Angel in Hell, a Hollywood film adaptation of the fall of Los Angeles, starring Nicholas Cage as Angel Cartwright. The film heavily promoted the restaurant chain onscreen, while the Doublemeat Palace gave away free toys with each meal.[4]

Behind the scenes

  • Joss Whedon revealed that the portrayal of the fast food industry with the Doublemeat Palace caused sponsors to threaten to pull support: “The only thing that we’ve ever actually been stopped or asked to stop doing was the fast food run. When Buffy worked at the fast food joint it made the advertisers very twitchy. So apparently the most controversial thing we ever had on Buffy was a hamburger and chicken sandwich.”[5]
