Death and Consequences, Part One is the sixteenth issue of the Angel & Faith comic book series. Written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, it was originally published on November 28, 2012, by Dark Horse Comics.

Synopsis[]

Angel's plan to resurrect Giles inches ever closer toward success. As he and Faith hack their way toward one more magical item to help in their venture, Angel reveals it is time to get the final part of Giles's soul. But their triumphant return to London holds more than one surprise: first, the revenge-seeking Nadira and the Slayers come calling...

Summary[]

In Peru, Angel and Faith fight a group of lizard demons with regenerative powers in a cave lair. Angel explains the Crown of Coils has allowed the demons to regenerate, which is why Angel needs it. They get it and, once outside, Angel tests the crown on a decomposing human corpse, and it restores the man's appearance. Angel then tells Faith the next steps of his plan, namely to have Alasdair study the crown while they dig up Giles' remains.

On the plane home, Faith thinks back to a discussion she had with Giles about her hostility to people she did not know, but also her extreme loyalty to people close to her. He also warns her that some Slayers who go over the edge can be too far gone for either of them to save.

Upon returning to London, Angel and Faith dig up Giles' coffin but find it empty. Later at the Giles residence, they talk over the situation with Lavinia and Sophie. Faith notes the grave was untouched, so the body was stolen before the coffin was buried.

The doorbell rings; it is Nadira, Daphne, and the other Slayers. They yell at Faith to open the door because they know Angel is in there with her. Faith opens the door, and, after being accused of lying, she explains that Angel was under the influence of Twilight and is not to blame. Nadira says now is not the time to discuss it; instead, they bring Marianne, the Slayer Drusilla killed right after Angel let her escape. Angel defends himself saying Drusilla's followers had attacked them and they lost the trace, but Nadira argues it seems convenient that he has stopped many powerful beings but keeps failing to kill a single vampire, whom he just so happened to have sired.

Another Slayer reminds everyone they are here because of Marianne. Faith explains she was the kindest girl, always there for her fellow Slayers. Nadira demands Angel to bring her back; the girls know about their plan for Giles and wantes Angel and Faith to use the resurrection power on Marianne instead. Angel explains it is only possible because of Giles' connection to magic. Nadira punches Angel and threatens him to find a way to make it work for Marianne or they will come for him. Then Daphne gets a text message about an alternative plan. The girls left, having severed ties with Faith.

The Slayers arrive at a mansion in Guildford, and two security guards at the door let them in. They are lead into the living room, where they get to speak to their contact. Nadira says she wants to know about resurrecting the dead. Giles replies he has some experience in that area.

Continuity[]

  • Faith doubts the Crown of Coils will work, comparing it to when the Blood of Eternity was revealed to backfire because of the end of magic in Live Through This, Part Four
  • In the flashback, Faith mentions to Giles the start of their partnership and how she has been the one who decides to "council" Slayers in No Future for You, Part Four
  • When Nadira accuses Angel of murdering hundreds of Slayers as Twilight, Faith disagrees and says he was under of the influence of the real Twilight when he did that. Angel stated he was in control in certain intervals in Live Through This, Part One.
  • Angel references his fight with Drusilla alongside Faith as well as her escape in Daddy Issues, Part Four.

Quotes[]

Giles: "Given the state of the world, I still believe it is crucial these girls receive guidance. But you've seen firsthand those who can't be helped. As one whose worked with Slayers for... Well, the exact amount of time isn't relevant... I promise you there will be more. Those who are so damaged they can only drag anyone who seeks to aid them into their morass of pain and destruction. Faith, I would never forgive myself if I allowed that to happen to you."
Nadira: "You made it my business. You lied to me about knowing where he is. Then the two of you fought back to back, in a burning church in front of dozens of witnesses. He murdered an entire unit of Slayers last year. My sisters."
Faith: "He was under the influence of Twilight. Which I know you think was him, but it was, like, this cosmic force of— Jesus, even I don't understand it."
Nadira: "You kill demons and monsters and elder gods like you're swatting bloody flies, but one vampire keeps getting away from you. One vampire you 'sired,' isn't that what you leeches call it? One vampire you shagged. One vampire you spent a hundred years slaughtering people with. Now another girl's dead. One more body on the pile. And here you are, full of excuses, reasons why it's not your damn fault—"
Angel: "I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way. Death is a natural process. I don't know the specifics, but souls still go where they belong when someone dies. It's not magic. I don't know exactly how it works, to be honest. But it's part of the life cycle. That doesn't get interrupted just because the Seed's gone."
Nadira: "Ifs and maybes. How do you know? You're not some wizard. You're not even a Watcher. You're just saying what you want to be true, you selfish bastard! Well, since you only give a toss about yourself, consider this. If you can't bring her back... or won't... this only goes one way."
Nadira: "Faith. We trusted you. And you lied to us. You looked into my face and you lied. For him. You made your choice. Now live with it. We want nothing more to do with you."
