Cassandra Rayne was an ancestor of Ethan Rayne and a Champion of the Powers That Be that fought the First Evil.
Before the First killed her and hid her body parts in Sunnydale, Cassandra placed Hope's Dagger (the only weapon that can hurt the First) in The First's lair, a castle in its own hell dimension. Cassandra guided Buffy Summers to the castle where only a champion could enter. She died again after Buffy's victory over the First.
