Carl Marin was a Sunnydale High coach. Using old Soviet Union experiments, he attempted to improve the swim team's chances of success by adding the drugs to the steam rooms, increasing the boys' physical abilities significantly. However, prolonged exposure caused the team to begin to mutate into fish-like creatures. Despite this, Marin continued his efforts, keeping the mutated boys contained in a part of the sewer system under a utility room.
Nurse Greenliegh helped him with his experiments, but when she began to question him, he fed her to the mutated boys. He threw Buffy Summers to his boys to satisfy their "other needs," but Xander Harris intervened. As a result, Marin was thrown into the sewers and consumed by his boys.
