Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12 is the twelfth issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2019) comic book series. Written by Jordie Bellaire and illustrated by David López, it will be published by Boom! Studios on February 5, 2020.

Synopsis[]

As TEAM KENDRA fights for their town against the Hellmouth-possessed hivemind, Willow and Xander begin to feel the cost of sharing a soul between them. With darkness creeping into the place a soul should be, one of them will start down a road that they can’t turn back from.[1]

Summary[]

At the cemetery, the army of possessed men begin to turn on each other, each yelling: "Get out of my way." Anya tells Willow, Xander, and Kendra they should leave, assuring them Robin will be fine. While Willow and Xander question her, Anya hits one of the graves with her mallet and it pops open, revealing a secret passage, into which she leads them.

Rose is still at Tunaverse, waiting for Kendra to come back. Cordelia, wearing a Tunaverse uniform, tells Rose that it's time for her to lock up. They discuss Kendra. Cordelia thinks Kendra showing up is strange. She believes the town doesn't need a hero, it just needs everyone to be better. As Rose helps Cordelia clean up, they wonder why Sunnydale is such a strange place — perhaps it was built on a burial ground.

Down in the secret passage, Anya explains to the other three that the possessed men aren't their biggest problem. Kendra agrees; it's her duty to close the Hellmouth, she says. Anya realizes who Kendra is and reveals that there is more than one Slayer at the moment: Buffy is definitely still alive, she says. Her destiny has taken her outside of their mortal plane, allowing for another Slayer to be called: two Slayers, one Hellmouth. When Willow inquires further about destiny, Anya mentions the Powers That Be and tells her: "It's down to each of us to be our best selves in the place we're meant to be," just before the group arrives at a ladder.

Above, Rose and Cordelia are still cleaning, discussing Cordelia's dream to save up enough money to move to L.A. to act and model. Rose admits she wants to be a writer. Just as Cordelia offers Rose a ride home, a man bangs on the glass, yelling, "Get out of my way." More join him, all hitting the glass with their fists. They spot Giles in the crowd and Rose wants to let him in, but changes her mind when Giles begins banging his forehead against the glass. As the girls try not to panic, Giles puts his fist through the window. At the same moment, Anya appears from the tunnel and puts up a magical shield around the restaurant, followed by Kendra, Xander, and Willow, who is relieved to see Rose is okay. Anya reveals a cache of weapons she has stashed in the restaurant.

Meanwhile, at Buffy's house, Joyce is trying to prevent Eric from joining the other men. Eric throws her off, and Joyce collapses on the porch, worried and confused. At her own house, Jenny notices an aura of magic over the Tunaverse in the distance.

Back at the Tunaverse, the possessed men are trying to get through the magical barrier. Anya is looking for something she can't find. When she says that Willow is their plan B, Willow objects that she's not ready. The men crash through the barrier, and as they attack, Willow sees Rose struggling and realizes she has to be ready. Willow rises into the air, surrounded by a purple aura, her eyes turning dark. Xander asks Anya what's happening. Still searching her pockets, Anya explains that the Soul Tie left both Xander and Willow between two worlds. Willow has been struggling with another part of herself, just as Xander has. Xander doesn't think anything is worth seeing Willow in so much pain. Anya says he's the only one who can reverse the process — but to wait for her signal. Xander understands that he has to give Willow his half of her soul and reaches toward Willow, remembering a time she helped him up after he'd fallen off his bike as a child. "If she's sick, I wanna be sick, too," he says.

Camazotz arrives, making the possessed men cower. Anya signals Xander, and he says goodbye to Willow as he takes her hand. They both begin to fall, the ghostly form of Xander's soul hanging between them. Outside, Anya and Kendra look up at Camazotz, who has Jenny astride his back. As the women fly off on Camazotz, Willow is in tears. An ominous voice promises to finish what they started and bathe in their blood.

Continuity[]

  • Anya reveals to the Scoobies that Kendra's activation is due to Buffy being to another plane while in the Hellmouth (Hellmouth, Part One), not being actually dead like Robin presumed in issue #11.
  • Xander says "If she's sick, I wanna be sick too," a parallel to what Willow said about him when they were children (issue #7) and when he was sired (issue #5).
