The Battle of the Alley was the intended "last stand" of Team Angel after they rebelled against the Senior Partners and slew the Circle of the Black Thorn. After the Fall of Los Angeles was reversed, the team was able to defeat the demon army and win the conflict in the new timeline.
Background[]
After they successfully slew every member of the Black Thorn, as well as Marcus Hamilton, the four surviving members of Team Angel (Angel, Spike, Charles Gunn, and Illyria) proceeded to gather in the alleyway north of the Hyperion Hotel, where they were quickly assailed by a massive army of demons sent by Wolfram & Hart. Expecting to die right there, Angel and his friends resolved to simply fight to the finish and go out in a blaze of glory.
However, the army was just a precursor to their true plans: in the midst of the battle, Gunn was captured and turned into a vampire, and the Senior Partners transported all of L.A. to a hell dimension and turned Angel into a human to hinder him.
Revised Timeline[]
After the Senior Partners were forced to rewind time, Team Angel was returned to the middle of the battle where Illyria, retaining her memories of her time in Hell and what Wesley Wyndam-Pryce had meant about Winifred Burkle, fought with a previously-unseen passion, acting almost human and slaughtering many of the demons single-handedly. Illyria was soon joined by Cordelia the Dragon and while Spike focused on helping the others to fight the remaining demons, Angel went in search of Charles Gunn before it was too late.
Angel was able to reach Gunn before he could be sired while the vampire who would have done it, apparently remembering the Fall, told Angel that he was going to "do it right this time" and not make the same mistakes. Angel staked the vampire while Cordelia burned the other vampires that were accompanying him. Angel refused to leave Gunn behind and Illyria ordered him to get Gunn to help as the army was nearly finished. Illyria slew the last of the demons and the battle ended in victory for Team Angel.
Aftermath[]
With Gunn still badly wounded, Cordelia transported the team to Wolfram & Hart in search of healing potions, only to find the entire building gone as if it never existed. The team then transported Gunn to the hospital where he was immediately wheeled into surgery. Although Gunn eventually recovered, his injuries left him in a coma for more than a month.
