A battle that took place at the Hellmouth was a pivotal event in the war against the First Evil. In 2003, Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang led a group of recently activated Slayers into Sunnydale's Hellmouth to fight the First Evil's army of Turok-Hans.[1]

History[]

Background[]

With the resurrection of Buffy Summers, the First Evil saw the vulnerability of the Slayer line and took the opportunity to command Harbingers of Death into killing Potential Slayers worldwide.[2] The Scooby Gang gathered a group of surviving Potentials in Sunnydale to protect them, but they discovered the First Evil had been growing an army of Turok-Hans beneath them in the Hellmouth.[3]

In Los Angeles, Lilah Morgan offered Angel an amulet described as crucial for some kind of final battle in Sunnydale.[4] He took it and visited the town while Buffy Buffy and the First's servant Caleb had a duel in the Guardian's tomb. Angel offered to wear it in the battle, but Buffy requested him to run a second front in case the Scoobies didn't contain the apocalypse.[1]

Buffy reunited her allies to communicated the plan she had formed: to confront the First's army directly in the Hellmouth and finally defeat it. She intend of doing so by having Willow use the Scythe to activate multiple Slayers worldwide and use their power in the battle.[1]

Buffy, Faith, and the group of Potentials used their blood to open the Seal of Danzalthar beneath Sunnydale High School. They entered the Hellmouth with Spike, who wore the amulet. Concurrently, Anya, Andrew, Dawn, Xander, Wood, and Giles paired up at pivotal positions in the school hallways to prevent any fleeing Turok-Han from reaching the outside world. In the principal's office, Kennedy guarded Willow as she wielded the Scythe to perform the Slayer activation spell.[1]

The battle[]

The Turok-Hans quickly spot Buffy, Faith, and the Potentials in the Hellmouth and charged toward them. Willow performed the spell, and the newly activated Slayers skillfully fought the Turok-Hans using stakes, staves, knives, and bare hands. While Willow lay tired on the floor, Kennedy grabbed the Scythe and ran to give it to Buffy, who killed even more Turok-Hans with it.[1]

The duos in the hallways used swords and sunlight to fight the Turok-Hans that broke into the school above. Bringers also joined the First's army in the hallways. One bisected Anya from behind while she killed two others, and another Bringer wounded Wood in the abdomen.[1]

In the Hellmouth, the amulet began to hurt Spike, and a Turok-Han stabbed Buffy. She gave her Scythe to Faith to hold the line, who gave it to Rona once Turok-Hans swarmed her. A Turok-Han bit a Slayer, and another killed Amanda. After killing various Turok-Hans with the Scythe, Rona gave it back to Buffy once she was back on her feet. The Slayers were also renewed and continued to fight, including Faith, Chao-Ahn, Vi, and Kennedy.[1]

Suddenly, Spike fell against a wall and a bright light shot from the amulet, breaking the floors into the principal's office. A beam of sunlight passed onto it and redirected in all directions, disintegrating the Turok-Han army. As the cavern began to collapse, Faith ordered the retreat. The remaining Slayers ran and helped each other to evacuate. Xander unsuccessfully tried to find Anya, and Dawn pulled him out. Those who escaped boarded a school bus.[1]

Buffy remained behind with Spike. She told him he had done enough, but he argued he had to do the clean up. He insisted she left him alone, and she hold his flaming hand. Buffy told Spike she loved him, and he disagreed thanking her. Ordering her to leave, Spike began to burn as the sunlight continued to fall on him, eventually causing him to immolate, laughing in the process.[1]

Outside the school, Faith leapt aboard the bus and told Wood to drive on as the campus began to plummet into a fissure. Dawn sat at the back of the bus, searching the scene for Buffy as the survivors fled a quickly crumbling Sunnydale. Buffy escaped the school and ran alongside the bus atop the buildings of Sunnydale. Just as the bus reached Maple Court, Buffy leaped onto the roof and watched as the remainder of the town fell into the earth.[1]

Aftermath[]

Coming to a halt outside of the town's boundaries, the survivors exited the bus and reunited with Buffy. The group surveyed the rubble that was Sunnydale; all that remained was some debris, the Welcome to Sunnydale sign (which promptly collapsed), and a vast crater. Wood "surprised" Faith by not dying of his wounds, and the group then contemplated what to do next, to which Buffy simply smiled.[1]

Lindsey was able to recover the amulet Spike had wore in the battle and sent it to Los Angeles as part of a plan to undermine Angel's self-worth and reputation as a Champion.[5] Despite his disintegration in the Hellmouth, Spike was restored[6] as a ghost in the Wolfram & Hart Los Angeles branch three weeks later.[7]

Participants[]

Scooby Gang[]

The Scooby Gang side counted with two experienced Slayers, eighteen new Slayers, an ensouled vampire, one witch, and six non-supernatural vampire hunters. There was a total of four known casualties among them.[1]

First Evil[]

The First Evil commanded over an army of thousands of Turok-Hans and at least eight Bringers, all defeated in the battle.[1]
