The Battle at the Hellmouth was a pivotal event in the Buffyverse timeline that took place in 2003 in Sunnydale, California between the forces of the First Evil and the Vampire Slayer army under the command of Buffy Summers/The Scooby Gang.

Background

The climatic event took place underneath/within Sunnydale High School.

In an attempt to stop it's apocalyptic plans, Buffy Summers alongside Faith Lehane, Spike (who wears the amulet Angel gives Buffy) and an army of potential slayers decended into the Sunnydale Hellmouth through the mystical Seal of Danzalthar to directly confront the gathering Turok-Han forces of the First Evil. Meanwhile, Willow Rosenberg prepares powerful magics to access the essence of the Slayer Sythe so to transform all of the Potential Slayers into actual, full powered slayers. Concurrently, Anya Jenkins, Andrew Wells, Dawn Summers, Xander Harris, Robin Wood and Rupert Giles pair up at pivotal positions within the school to prevent any fleeing Turok-Han from reaching sewer access and thus the outside world.

The Battle

Soon after decending into the Hellmouth the Scoobies and their allies were spotted by the Turok-Han who instantly charged in their direction. In spite of these overwhelming odd's Buffy was certain that Willow would soon come to their aid, and sure enough within seconds the power of the slayer filled every one of the potentials, and the battle began.

The fighting is ferocious, Buffy using the Scythe slew many opponents whilst Spike, Faith, Vi, Rona and the other New Slayers fought valiantly and killed many attacking vampires. However, it was not enough, several slayers are killed (including Amanda) and the Turok-Han quickly break through their lines, ascending into the school above.

Within minutes of this, dozens of Turok-Han swarm the civilian defences. Aided by Bringers on the surface, the vampires fight to break out of the school, however they are successfully repeled by the two-person teams. Through this, casualties are taken on both sides: many Bringers are slaughtered alongside the Turok-Han, whilst Wood is viciously stabbed and Anya is bisected from behind.

Meanwhile, back inside the Hellmouth, Buffy is stabbed by a Turok-Han and is taunted by The First in guise as herself. This attempt to demoralize her infact does the very opposite, and in a burst of renewed strength Buffy leaps to her feet, re-claims the Scythe wielded by Rona and bravely fights on. Many other slayers, Faith included, are also renewed and fight galantly against the swarms of Turok-Han.

Suddenly, the Spike's amulet activates and brilliant blue energy blasts through the Seal and the school, allowing a beam of sunlight to pass onto it, which is subsequently re-directed in all directions: disintegrating the Turok-Han army. As the cavern begins to collapse, Faith orders the retreat, the remainign slayers evacuate and board a nearby school bus alongside Giles, a crippled Wood, Willow, Dawn, Xander and a traumatized Andrew. Buffy remains behind for a short time and shares a touchign moment with Spike, telling him she loves him. Even though he disagree's, he is grateful that she say's it. Ordering her to leave, Spike begins to burn as the sunlight continues to fall on him, eventually causing him to immolate, laughing in the process.

Outside the school Faith leaps aboard the bus and tells Wood to drive on as the campus begins to plummet into a fissure, Dawn sits at the back of the bus searching the scene for Buffy as the survivors flee a quickly crumbling Sunnydale. Buffy has meanwhile escaped the school and runs alongisde the bus, albeit atop the buldings of Sunnydale. Just as the bus reaches the Sun Cinema, Buffy leaps onto the roof, and watches as the remainder of the town falls into the earth.

Aftermath

Coming to a halt outside of the towns boundaries, the survivors exit the bus and are reunited with Buffy, the group then surveys the rubble that was Sunnydale, all that remains are some debris, the "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign (which promptly collapses) and a vast crater. Wood "surprises" Faith by not dying of his wounds and the group then contemplate what to do next, to which Buffy simply smiles. Victory for the good guys once again.
