Alchemy spell was a spell to turn an object into solid gold.[1]

History[]

During a battle with the demon-god Camazotz five years into an alternate future, Willow Rosenberg, then a powerful sorceress, used the spell to turn a crossbow bolt to gold which she then used to kill Camazotz. Researching Camazotz's weakness over the five years that had passed, she discovered that the alchemy spell wouldn't work if the user was doing it for personal gain.[1]

After returning to her own time in order to change the future, Buffy informed Willow of the spell, which the witch believed she located in an alchemy text by St. Germain. However, Willow, less powerful and confident in her abilities at this point in time, was unable to perform the spell in a test. She suggested other solutions, such as melting down gold and coating a dagger, but Buffy was unsure if a weapon that was not solid gold would work.[1]

While battling Camazotz, Willow attempted and failed to use the spell to turn a stake to gold, forcing Buffy to try to find an alternate solution. After Buffy nearly fell to the demon-god, Willow attempted the spell again and this time succeeded, allowing Buffy to kill Camazotz with a golden stake. Willow subsequently tossed the stake into the ocean, citing the rule of alchemy about not using it for personal gain.[1]

Requirements[]

The spell required the object to be transformed and an incantation in what to Buffy sounded like French, involving the words for "gold" and "fire." However, it wouldn't work if the caster's intentions weren't pure, as they must not be using the spell for personal gain even on a subconscious level. As a result, the spell generally didn't work for those using it.[1]
