"Alarums" was the sixth issue of the Fray comic book series.
Synopsis
Mel carried Loo’s body into the streets where the citizens of Versi were stunned. Loo’s mother hit her, but Mel took it and Urkonn told her that he had something for her. He explained that it was a weapon and once he had given it to her, Mel walked towards the crowd and held up the scythe. “I have something to say,” she stated.
She told them all that there had been a murder and that everyone was in danger. She told them of the Lurks and claimed that they would be coming for them. Mel was not sure what she wanted the people of Versi to do, but she told them that if they stood together then perhaps they could save themselves from the unimaginable horror that was coming. They were not having any of it.
Meanwhile, Harth told his vampire followers of his plan: he was leading them straight into Hell. Or rather he was bringing it home to them.
Elsewhere, the two spirits who communed with Urkonn discussed the situation. One wanted to send reinforcements, but the other claimed that the portal had already been breached and that Mel would have to do.
Melaka was annoyed with the lack of cooperation on the people’s part. She planned to find Harth, but heared something. Sneaking into a part of a building, she found Lurks feeding on a girl. She wielded the scythe with incredible ease and slayed the creatures, experiencing the dusting process for the first time. Reeling in her victory, she was taken by surprise by more Lurks. One Lurk knocked the scythe into the river, and Mel dove in after it. She finally defeated the Lurks and Urkonn was impressed. Harth was not.
Elsewhere, Erin explained Harth’s plan to her colleagues. They were not convinced and Erin thought that despite her sister’s claims, Mel had lost it.
Harth was distraught that Mel had finally claimed her Slayer powers. He sent Icarus after her, but he wanted the body.
In Versi, Mel proved that the Lurks were demons. She told the people that they were coming and that they could be defeated. She wanted the word to be spread, but then Icarus turned up, reading for a fight. Mel smiled, and she raised her scythe with no fear at all.
Continuity
The events took place after "The Worst of It", but before "The Gateway".
- This was the first time the Scythe made its appearance. It would later also appear on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starting from episode "Touched".
