| A Watcher named Dunworthy has taken four young Watchers-in-training down into the basement of the Watchers Academy building. He brought them to a tomb and had them armed; Sophie chose a stake, as did Edna. They were led into a room where a vampire was kept in chains. Sophie recognized him as Roche. Dunworthy praised her, but admitted he had forgotten her name. Roche explained to the young Watchers that vampires were no animals, but complex beings and he began telling them stories of vampires past, present, and future. | ||||||

| The children, as well as Roche, break from the storytelling for lunch. Edna ponders why a vampire as powerful as Roche claims to be would allow himself to be used in this way. | ||||||

| Edna writes in her diary, recounting the events of the past day. She notes that she's beginning to find Roche as inviting as he is unsettling. The next day, the Watchers-in-training are assembled around him once again. Roche begins to talk of how he longs to savage them all, only to be chided by Dunworthy. | ||||||

| Following the vampires acceptance in mainstream society, the world has changed. On a Tuesday night in a small town called Nashua, New Hampshire. Jacob, the narrator, is spending another night endlessly playing video games at the local arcade, he tells us of how he had a bad day at school and how living in this town is nothing but the same old repetitive numbness that keeps consuming him day by day. He exits the arcade and is approached by a sultry blonde girl named May, a college student, who is drawn to Jacob and they spark up a conversation. | ||||||

| A vampire was walking down a road at night, thinking of how he had gotten into that situation. He had been a grifter playing cards at a Las Vegas casino. He got into the job not for the money, but the excitement. He saw a beautiful woman getting dragged out of the casino by security guards and followed them. Outside he confronted them a and they drew their guns on him. He easily killed them and to his surprise this did not frighten the woman. | ||||||

| After vampires were exposed to the public, female vampire Cyn became extremely frustrated with the rules laid down by Harmony Kendall, feeling she could not be a real vampire anymore. Meanwhile, her roommate, Ash, loved the newfound attention she had been receiving. They went out clubbing and, after being approached by a man who was into vampires, Cyn took him into an alley, where she drained and killed him. | ||||||

| Cyn agreed to go out clubbing more often, using this as an excuse to find more prey. As Ash took home a man and proceeded to have sex and drink from him, she asked Cyn to join. She did, but then drained the man. The two roommates got into an argument and Ash staked Cyn, remarking that she should have changed with the times. | ||||||
