A Watcher named Dunworthy has taken four young Watchers-in-training down into the basement of the Watchers Academy building. He brought them to a tomb and had them armed; Sophie chose a stake, as did Edna. They were led into a room where a vampire was kept in chains. Sophie recognized him as Roche. Dunworthy praised her, but admitted he had forgotten her name. Roche explained to the young Watchers that vampires were no animals, but complex beings and he began telling them stories of vampires past, present, and future.
