Seeing as this is new, I was wondering if anyone on here wanted to listen to my opinions about characters. So, the way I was gonna frame it would be:
My Opinion, and then in comments people can disagree with me (in a respectful manner) and we can have a discussion. This could happen with seasons and other stuff as well (like places, ie. the library or the Summers house, etc.). Anyway these are gonna be loooong. If you want them shorter please tell me and I can try, but these will kinda seem like essays.
I though I would start it with a rant about why I LOVE Buffy:
Ok, so we start off the show like many have done since with main character who has a duty/destiny, doesn't want to do it but reluctantly has to (but I think in Buffy's case she was very keen to make sure people don't die). Honestly, the way she handled it was pretty good. Like she knew that that's what she had to do even though she got kicked out of school because of it. There was an obvious reason that she is the Slayer, coz, along with physical abilities, she clearly couldn't help herself when it came to helping other. And we saw this throughout the whole show. She is so selfless and puts literally everyone before herself, she doesn't consider herself as more important than anyone else which is very important to her whole character arc. I am very protective of Buffy and I'll give examples soon.
Back to the selfless thing, she heard the prophecy in S1 that she was going to be killed by the Master, and like any 16 year old she's like "Nah, not gonna happen, I'm too young to die, I don't want to". And honestly, Sarah Michelle Geller's performance in the scene were she tells Giles she doesn't wanna die literally gets me everytime. Like I feel it with her. But, then she comes to the conclusion that she has to try, even though she's going to die she cannot stand idly by while other people are getting killed. She dies, as you know, comes back, deliver the iconic "I may be dead, but I'm still pretty. Which is more than I can say for you" and wins. And that's just season 1. At the end of S2 she decides to kill the Love of her life, her first true love whom she had finally gotten back in order to save the planet. I mean it seems like the obvious thing to do but it's absolutely heart-wrenching to watch, and it stands the test of time (like i still see it on saddest Teen Drama deaths). And then, even though she's already dead, and knows Dawn is literally fake, not an actual person, she feels the bond and decides to use herself to save the world. Knowing she will die, she decided to save her sister and delivered that ICONIC speech (i'm probably gonna say iconic heaps coz she is iconic). So you know, she dies again, selflessly to save the world. Then, in S6 she barely complained, even though she had every right to. I mean they brought her back from heaven to pretty much a literal hell. I would've for sure complained a lot more. But she could see that her friends were hurting and that her sister needed her so she toughened up, continued to fight monsters and tried her best to provide for Dawn. And Finally in S7, she literally said, let's give everyone who can have superpowers, superpowers. And like this may seem a bit, idk selfish i guess coz you can interpret it as being selfish so she can retire while others do the monster fighting work, but she gave up a big part of her identity (being the chosen one) to everyone so that the world can be safer. There's also the whole Prom thing where she went to fight the monsters so that everyone could have a prom, even though she really wanted one (and then the umbrella they gave her; oh guys i'm getting seriously fangirly over here). There's also heaps more but I'm doing this off the top of my head so I'm bound to miss stuff.
Next, I wanna talk about her sass/quips. Like she literally said the funniest things ever. It was nice for the viewers to laugh (although this was a staple of the show so all characters kinda did this) but also it just made her seem so much more bad-ass. I've already mentioned the S1 finale, which honestly is one of the best lines ever. Like who even says that when they die? I would be too traumatised to do anything (like fight him), especially make jokes (like i probs wouldn't even talk). I mean she constantly did it, I could probably just give like a whole post of just the funniest things she's said, but we'll save that for later. I feel everyone knows what I'm talking about.
Finally, (although there are heaps of other things i could probably say) her flaws. Like she is not perfect, like far from it. She sort of embraces it but also kind of doesn't. And I love it. Who wants to see a perfect person? That would be a bit annoying. So, for 1, she always had a bit of a problem with authority figures. She thought she knew best (and like I get where she's coming from, coz Giles and her mom cannot actually understand what she goes through). She has a bit of a superiority complex, which stems from her being the slayer. Like a lot of the time she thinks she's the best and can do no wrong, but then she also is the only one who thinks she does wrong when she doesn't. She kinda has an inferiority complex about her superiority complex and I LOVE it. Like she is so three dimensional (probably more dimensions to be honest) and has such good personality. Like she makes many mistakes and then owns them and tries to do better. And she also doubts herself a lot, which honestly is like so relatable. Like she is just such a well rounded person.
She has so many good qualities, but she also has bad ones. And it makes her sort of relatable (I mean if you take away like the obvious metaphors that Joss uses, she is still relatable). I mean sure, we won't all come back from the dead after dying to protect the world and our fake sister, but financial difficulty, and the way she was working to get everything through and try and keep everyone in her life happy is so relatable. I honestly think that even if she complained more it would have been fine. and probably even more justified coz her life has been insane. I really love buffy. This came apart a bit at the end but still.
NOTE: Ok this is just me but this whole year i've been thinking about when she said "If the apocalypse comes, beep me" coz someone should seriously beep her.
